Scripture Psalm 52:2-4

When I was young and someone would say something unkind to me, I would tell them that names won't hurt me. I realize now, how untrue this statement is. When people are hurt physically, the wounds eventually heal. Words spoken in rashness though, sometimes cause wounds that never heal. I say never, meaning unless that person allows God to heal it.

People often say things without even thinking before they speak. Once the words leave the tongue, the damage is done, they cannot be taken back. Make no wonder the Psalmist asked the Lord to set a watch before his mouth and to keep the door of his lips. We have to be careful what we say. If we can't speak things that are good, we shouldn't speak at all.

James described the tongue as being "evil," and "full of deadly poison and unable to be tamed." A little child will copy what they hear their parents say. We should only say what we feel Jesus would say. The world is listening, what is it hearing? Proverbs 12:22 (NIV) says that the Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in men who are truthful. God is watching and he hears our every word. What kind of lips and tongue do you have? One that speaks words of love or one that just speaks. Think about it! (SELAH...meaning think on this)

Please set a watch on my mouth
Must be our prayer each day
The only words we should speak
Are words we know our Lord would say
