Life is hard on the Haitian island of La Gonave, there is little water, medical
supplies or food. But the women living in proverty there have found a
new way to help support their families. The Atis Fanm Matenwa, women of Matenwa, a
tiny community in the mountains of La Gonave, have started a creative venture that
provides them with much needed money, while having no adverse impact on the fragile
environment of the island. They draw freehand, and then handpaint, 100% silk scarves
for sale in the US. These make beautiful, useful gifts, while helping to
empower these women and their communities.
To buy a scarf, or volunteer to help, contact US artist Ellen LeBow at Lbo@cape.com or Chris Low, co-director of the Matenwa
Community Learning Center at chriswlow@aol.com.
