----====[ Martinsburg ]====----

They formed us in a skirmish line,

Five thousand rifles strong.

And sent us into Martinsburg,

To do the Yankees wrong.

---======---

We took the town and stopped to rest,

But soon we had to yield.

For forty thousand Yankee troops,

Were comin' 'cross the field.

---======---

It's hard to win a war you lose,

By winning every fight.

By day we'd run them Yankees off,

But they'd return each night.

---======---

We killed two dozen bluecoats

For each ten of ours we lost.

But even that just wouldn't do,

We couldn't spare the cost.

---======---

I hear we'll leave and head on south,

To Richmond, where we'll stand.

With one of ours worth three of theirs,

We'll still defend our land.

---======---

But I keep wonderin' why it is

That they have all them guns?

Why all our foundries never work?

Our navy always runs?

---======---

We have the generals, and the men,

We ought to win this war.

But they keep comin', every day,

And killin' a few more.

---======---

Tomorrow back to Martinsburg,

Four thousand rifles strong.

But now the odds are ten to one,

We're winnin'...but it's wrong.
