When defending the use of violence, pragmatists - Christian and atheist (there is no difference) - invariably resort to four pillars that they see as justifying their actions. Of course, they never consider that, say, the terrorists or enemy armies think along the same lines, but that is another essay...

As I understand it, the arguement of the pro-violence people seems to be that devotion to one's life, family, property and nation comes first. Though claimed otherwise, Christian ethics (which ultimately comes down to our devotion to God) comes second. Should Christian ethics prove inadequate for the protection of one's life, family, property and nation, then it is Christian ethics that are put on the shelf... Politely excused while the "realities of realpolitik" are handled. This strikes me as the fulfillment of Luke 8:11-15 and Luke 16:13.

Luke 8:11-15

"Now the parable is this: the seed is the word of God. Those beside the road are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their heart, so that they will not believe and be saved. Those on the rocky soil are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no firm root; they believe for a while, and in time of temptation fall away. The seed which fell among the thorns, these are the ones who have heard, and as they go on their way they are choked with worries and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to maturity. But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance."

Luke 16:13

"No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and Mammon."

As I list the supporting verses from the Gospels, there will be some obvious overlap with my previous article The Roots of Christian Pacifism and Anarchy. Anarchy is itself the dismissal of the concept of nationhood, so much of the overlap occurs here.

Luke 12:32-34

"Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has chosen gladly to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions and give to charity; make yourselves money belts which do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near nor moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

Matthew 4:8-10

Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory; and he said to Him, "All these things I will give You, if You fall down and worship me." Then Jesus said to him, "Go, Satan! For it is written, 'YOU SHALL WORSHIP THE LORD YOUR GOD, AND SERVE HIM ONLY.'"

Luke 20:21-25

They questioned Him, saying, "Teacher, we know that You speak and teach correctly, and You are not partial to any, but teach the way of God in truth. Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?" But He detected their trickery and said to them, "Show Me a denarius. Whose likeness and inscription does it have?" They said, "Caesar's." And He said to them, "Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." (cross-reference Genesis 1:27: God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.)

John 18:36-37

Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm." Therefore Pilate said to Him, "So You are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice."
