Extremes #5: Cerebro Drew, with Ms. Frost, walks into a dimly lighted room with fascinating decor. "This is the Ready Room, Drew," says Emma. "At the nucleus of the room is what I mentioned a few minutes ago, Cerebro." "What's it used for, Ms. Frost?" asks Drew filled with inquisitiveness. "It's where we find mutants all over the world. It's how we found you." "Ms. Frost? Sorry for intruding, but well, my mind often wanders and . . ." "It's all right, Drew. I understand. You saw a vision in my mind, am I right?" "Yes, well, the Cerebro unit looks different now than what I see in your mind. Why is that?" Climbing into the contraption, Emma says, "We haven't told you two have we?" "You and Mr. Cassidy? I don't recall . . ." "Well, my mind is open to you, Drew. Probe away." "That would be invading your privacy, ma'am. I can't do that." "Nonsense," she rebuked. "It would only be an invasion of my privacy if I hadn't told you so." "All right." Drew relaxes, closing his eyes, and then links his mind to that of his instructor. Without him being too drained after the new experience, Emma brings the memories of the Cerebro and the current events to the ‘front' of her mind so he wouldn't have to ‘dig.' The memories die away, leaving Drew in a state of shock. "How could something like this . . . happen? Alex mustn't know, ms. Frost! He wouldn't believe for a second that his role model turned out to be the trai . . ." "Be quiet now. We will discuss it later on. It's time you developed your psionic skills now." "Shouldn't we do that in the ‘Danger Grotto?'" he says as she gets out of the Cerebro unit. "This isn't for physical attacks, child. Use your powers to lift yourself into the machine, without opening the top." "I know that I can lift myself up, ma'am, but don't you think I'll have a problem getting situated into it." "Obviously, you don't know the slightest extent of your power, boy?" "Well, no, but . . ." "But nothing. Close your eyes and relax like before." "All right." "Now then, let your powers overflow you." "What do you mean?" "What I mean is to summon your power but not to direct it outside, but inside." "Oh. I can do that. Just never tried it before." Sparkling around Drew, a light blue flame encircles him continuously. Finally, he is covered with the bluish energy. The flame now turns into beams coming from every part of his body. As the blue beams diminish, he is seen transparent with the blue energies not around him, but within. "Is it over?" "Yes, Drew. You can open your eyes now." "Wow," he remarks looking into the blue nothingness. "What is this?" "You have a unique psionic power, Drew, in which you can reconstruct your corporeal body to that of astral energies. Now then, ‘phase' into the Cerebro unit, and then materialize." "Turning back into my physical body?" "That's right." Drew soars up to the contraption and passes through the barriers, then taking form of a tangible body. Two head pieces float toward Drew. Picking them up, he studies them carefully when . . . "Drew, it's all right." "Heh!" Drew snickers without any feeling. Drew puts the two devices upon his face, waiting for something to happen. Suddenly, Drew sees nothing but bright light surrounding him. "I remember this," he says. "This is the place I go to sometimes when I have my ‘spells.' I think Ms. Frost called it the Astral plane. A place where all minds are linked. Amazing." "Drew!" yells out Ms. Frost. "I am beginning the system now. You're going to have a first hand experience finding others like you. Like I said before . . ." "It's all right, Ms. Frost, I know what to do." He relaxes and lets the swirling energies of the mind whisk him away to find one such as him. As he is guided, any mutant he finds, his or her names automatically appear in the main computer storage. Sometimes, though, Drew looks upon these new mutants and sees what they're like. One such mutant catches his psionic eyes, and then he says, "Wow." "Drew? Are you okay?" starts a mental call from Emma. "The astral map says that you're staying in the same spot. Are you oka . . ." "I'm quite fine, Ms. Frost," says Drew taking off the things resting on his forehead. "How'd I do?" Then he repeats the process of getting into the Cerebro unit to get out. "Quite excellent, I do believe. You soared through there like you knew it since birth." Emma then realizes that Drew has not responded, and has a blank expression all over him. "Drew?" she asks. Glowing energies start encircling Drew. His clothes change in a mere second, even his physical appearance changes. As Emma Frost sees this, she is most impressed and bewildered. She views Drew as someone has clothed him in fine white robes over flowing around him. The energies are dismissed, and Emma is shocked as she observes the appearance of the young boy. His eyes are glowing a faded blue color in a form of a gentle flame, waiting to be kindled by his rage. The rest of his body is covered with a white a blue garment. As he speaks, his voice is hollow, "Emma Frost, do not be afraid." "What has happened to you?" she says backing away. "The presence of Drew Ebon is no longer here in a sense of your thinking. I am simply the soul of Drew." "His soul?" "In a manner of speaking, yes, but in a way, no. His mutant powers, you know, are psionic in nature. He also contains an ability to ‘beckon' me, a sort of spirit guide, to help him through life's journey. He is unaware of this, therefore you must not tell him!" his voice booms. "I am also considered a collage of wisdom and the power of enlightenment of those over the millennia, which gives him this power of the soul." "Will Drew ever find out?" "Yes, he will know soon enough. Emma? You look almost frightened of me. What is the matter?" "Your presence . . . seems familiar to me. Are you . . ." "Yes, I feel it, too, now. Somehow we know each other, but how is that possi*" "Drew?" she says as Drew falls onto the cold floor. "Ms. Frost. What happened?" "Nothing, dear, absolutely nothing. Come on, we'll . . ." "But Ms. Frost, what about the mutants I found on Cerebro?" "They'll be fine. We'll get to everyone of them as soon as we can. All right?" "All right." That night in Drew and Alex's dorm living room, Alex experiments with a fraction of his power to ‘play' with some metal objects, as Drew reads the school's handbook. "Alex?" "What, Drew?" "There's so many of ‘us' out there, you know? We should be helping them. Not sitting here and doing nothing!" "Calm down, man. This is only the first night here, so cool it." "You don't understand. Ms. Frost ‘introduced' me to the Cerebro unit, their mutant tracker system, and I saw a most charming person," he says slyly. "It was like I knew her already, yet I have never met her. Isn't that weird?" "It doesn't sound too weird to me. Maybe she's your soul mate. You never know," Alex says slouching. "You know I don't believe in soul mates. Well, I guess I do, in a sense anyway." Alex cannot do anything but laugh. "Hey, what's so funny?" asks Drew getting on top of the couch, grabbing one of the pillows and throwing it toward Alex. "Quit that!" Alex exclaims. Alex and Drew both run into their own rooms, grabbing all of the pillows they can find and have an all-out pillow war! Soon, they grow tired of the game and call it quits. "I'm pooped," Alex mumbles. "Me, too." "Well, what do we do tomorrow, Drew?" "Whatever the Fates have planned for us." "The Fates? What's that?" "It's a mythological saying," Drew hollers as Alex has a look of complexity.
