Extremes #3: Enter Orion "What do you . . . want from me?" asks Drew cowardly, staring at his unnamed adversary standing before him. "What I want, boy, or rather, the purpose of my being here, is this!" he yells driving his fist toward Drew's chest. Unseemly, his chest dissipates, and to Drew is filled with excruciating pain. "Alex! Can you hear me?!" remarks Drew through telepathic communication. The telepathic cry reaches Alex, filling his mind with the images of what's happening to Drew. "Drew?" Recently, Alex has discovered some of his powers of magnetism. One of those powers is of flight. He reaches down to the very depths of his soul to trigger his mutant ability. He is then surrounded by a crimson light, and finally soars away to help his friend. "What is the meaning of this?!" asks Drew to his opponent, trying to control the pain. "Why are you here?" "Because you possess a great threat to the endangerment of your fellow mutants!" "What are you talking about? I want to help mutants . . . and humans!" he hollers back. "Why do you want to waste your time to help those who fear and hate you? Don't you know they plan to destroy all of mutant kind?" "That's because of you!" "What? What do you mean?" he asks taking away his hand from Drew's chest, causing to revert to normal. "What I mean is," Drew starts as he sits up, "that all the so-called evil mutants terrorize the humans and any other mutant by displaying their powers frightens them. They fill insecure because we're more powerful. There have been so many bad mutants that the humans have had enough. They're ready to strike back now. That doesn't mean that we kill every human, and every mutant that gets in our way. It means that we fight the ones promoting the hate." "I never . . . thought of that." "That's right, gene-trash!" shouts a voice familiar to Drew. "Who dares?" the stranger queries. "Syntex! Remember it, because It's the name that's going to send you across the world!" Alex yells coming closer to Drew "Alex, what are you doing?" "Trying to save your butt! That's gratitude for you! I try to be good but NO . . ." "Alex, just shut up! I had him in control but you had to come along and distract him! By the way, where did you come up with that stupid codename?" "Stupid? Well, I'll show you stupid!" As Drew and Alex are apparently arguing, the outlander comes closer to them while he thinks to himself, "What are they doing?" "We're doing this, scum!" wails Drew turning around to look upon the confused mutant. "What?" "That's right!" Alex says. "We tricked you!" Alex once again summons his powers, points his hands to the ground causing it to rip apart and circumscribes the opposer like a fly within a Venus fly trap. The walls of earth encasing the individual juts out into many pieces and then simply disappear bewildering their eyes. "You imbeciles! You cannot defeat the hunter Orion!" he says finally revealing his name. "My powers are incomparable to yours!" "Alex? In this case of mortal terror, what do you think we should do now?" They stare into each others' eyes and then back at ‘Orion.' Alex says, "We run! I mean fly!" As Alex starts to hover above them, Drew stays calm and complacent. "Drew? What are you doing? Let's go. We can get help," Alex says without a response from Drew. "You know, two people that came from Massachusetts to get us? Drew? Hello?" "You know, I wonder, Orion. Why did you think, in the first place, that I was going to be an ‘endangerment' to my fellow mutants?" "Why don't you read my mind, child?" "All right. I think I will." "Drew, are you crazy?" "Don't patronize me, Alex. I know what I'm doing." Drew goes closer to Orion to psionically probe his mind, to see what he really wants from him. "Drew?" Alex whispers. Drew lifts up his hands and places them upon the forehead of this arrogant villain. From the ridge between Drew's hair and his face, blue streams come forth and seize, but not striking, Orion's mind. Although, before Drew can accomplish his goal, Orion grabs Drew's shoulders and uses his unique, and unexplained, powers on him. "Drew! No!" yells Alex in the background. Drew diminishes away with an illuminating light flashing before the other two's eyes. As the light fades, a smiling Drew stands in its place. "What? How can this be? My powers are infallible!" "I let you play out what you wanted to do. I really began the psi-probing before you saw it. I simply used my abilities to make an . . . illusion, to confuse you of course. I knew what you wanted to do, so I let your mind do the work for me." "Drew!" yells Alex, without tone of happiness his friend is well. "Do you know what you just did? You scared me half to death!" "Alex, like you even care, and please, do Orion and me and favor, end the noise pollution." (If one looked closely, that person could probably see steam rising from Alex's head.) "Oh, and Orion, I know about all of your villainous, but intriguing, plans to take over the world!" says Drew flying above them. "Wha?" "Oh, that was Alex's idea. Sorry. You're teamed up with a few of the most powerful mutants on this green yet polluted, earth because of some people," he says looking at Alex. "Hmp! What's your problem today? Using your powers sure does make you hyper!" Drew continues, "who want to destroy that favorite person of all mutants, Graydon Creed. Let's pass out the bunker stickers." "Enough! I have had enough of this foolishness." "Oh, have you?" asks Drew in brusque tone. "I don't think so." Drew points to the feet of Orion and is confined in that position. "What? I did it again! I said ‘What?' once again! Why do I do that?!" "That's probably because you're very ignorant of the situation at hand," says Drew grinning as he reads Orion's thoughts. "Drew, can you tell me something?" "Sure." "Why are you acting like this?" "I am waiting for your helping hand to defeat the bad guy! If you didn't notice, I'm the one doing all the work. And what are you doing? Flying away to get help when we are our own help." "Could you two stop this fighting? It's giving me a headache!" yells Orion still confused over the fighting of the two friends. "And, why is he acting like that?" Alex asks Drew of Orion. "I simply used my powers to make him act like a five-year-old, such as yourself." "What!?" "Oh, I'll give ye' a headache, boyo," says a prosaic Irish voice, "and then some." "Mr. Cassidy?" asks Alex. "How'd you know we were in trouble?" "That'd be my doing, Alex. I sent Ms. Frost a telepathic cry also." "Who is this character, Drew?" inquires Ms. Frost. "His name is Orion, ma'am," says Alex trying to get some credit. "You know, an ordinary person that something in their life has gone totally wrong and they become a villain and hunt innocent children for their hobby." Everyone turns toward Alex and stares blankly, while Drew whispers, "It would've been funnier if I had said it." "Will their childish chatter know no end?" screams Orion holding his head. "I will not stand this!" The telekinetic bond on his feat vanishes, and turns all of his energies upon Drew. "I swear to you boy, you will die by my hand!" Once more, Orion turns his abilities against Drew. Before his body turned into floating molecules, Emma psionically strikes Orion, turning his powers against himself. "I shall have my revenge! I'm immune to my power, ‘Ms. Frost.' I'll tell my friends that the little brat was good with no experience. Consider this a test, Drew Ebon! And I'll say hi to Marvel Girl's brother-in-law! Tell her that he's okay." And then just like that, he's gone without a trace, leaving as an evil laugh remains. "What? Alex?" "I wanna go to Massachusetts now, please," mumbles Alex as both him and Drew collapse in front of their future teachers. The next morning at Nashville Airport, Drew Ebon and Alex Davidson talk to one another while looking out an airport window at the planes going and leaving. They anticipate on seeing the private jet from Frost Enterprises coming down the landing strip. "I think it's cool," Alex says to his friend. "What's cool, Alex? That we're going to go someplace where we don't know a single soul?" "What's with you, Drew? The other day you were almost jumping for joy about going. Talk about your mood swings." "Only a day in the life of a telepath, Alex. Things are going to change. I can feel it. You could call us going through a "rite of passage" right now. We have a lot of responsibility now that we have our powers. Orion is always going to be there. Always watching us, planning to destroy what the whole foundation of the X-Men was built upon. I also believe what he said. This was only a test. Next time, it'll be for real." "Drew? What exactly did you see in his mind? You didn't tell Mr. Cassidy or Ms. Frost. What's the deal?" "Well, to tell you the truth, which is really scary, is that he and some other mutants have come together and formed a team named the Brotherhood. I found out that one of the members used to be an X-Man, the X-Man known as Havok. And if have my way, and I assure you I will, I will get their target before they do." "Who is it? That person you named yesterday? Graydon . . . something?" "Yes. Graydon Creed. He created the Friends of Humanity organization, but now he says he wants protection from them. Now he's running for president. He hates mutants. And he'll do anything to get rid of us." "Do you think there's any more of us? Mutants our own age without any guidance whatsoever?" "I'm sure there is, Alex, and when we find them, we're going to help them. No one should be raised in a world that hates and fears them just because they're different. I'm sure the Brotherhood will be after them too. Anyway you look at it, we're still part of the same tree." "Amen to that." "Well, it's time to go now. There's our ride to a definitely new world. Com'on, Ms. Frost is calling me to tell us that it's time." "Drew?" "Yes, Alex?" "One more thing. I'm glad that we're both mutants. Friends till the end?" "You go that," Drew remarks as he laughs. "Oh, and Alex, one more thing, too. On the plane, will you tell me about the future. You've hardly discussed it with me! Tell me! Tell me!" "Ahhhhhhhh!" screeches Alex running from Drew.
