Un-Statement

I have had to write too many of these statements in the past few years; they are a hazard of being an exhibiting artist. I have a problem with artist statements not because I hate to write or cannot write, unlike other artists, but because written statements defeat the objective of art. Some famous person once said "Writing about art is like dancing about architecture." How can one convey what art means with the use of words when words were not used to construct the piece of art? In the case of my art, which doesn't even attempt to "mean" anything, it seems even more futile. I personally have a problem with a piece of art that I find interesting or attractive only to read its title and find a literal interpretation, whereas before it was communicating on the more sublime level of colors, shapes and textures rather than narratives and politics. When visual art can be reduced to analysis, criticism, and storylines, it ceases to be visual and any visual medium it utilizes such as paint or clay becomes irrelevant.
