Pentium II 300/Pentium III 450

The Begining

I was setting in my dorm room of the summer of '98 and I finnaly decided I needed to upgrade my computer. I was then running a Pentium 166 with Generic AT MB and 72 pin RAM and a Diamond Stealth 2000 2MB (PCI). I bit the bullet and ordered a Tyan S1696S Tiger ATX and a PII 266, 32 MB Dimm, ATX Mid-Tower Case, and a brand new Diamond Fire GL 1000 Pro 8MB (AGP).

First Mutation

Sometime that fall my friend upgraded his 166 MMX to a PII 300. His parents then asked him to build a system for them. I got an evil glint in my eye and said that he should swap me my PII 266 and MB for his PII 300. By this time I had picked up a Tyan S1696DLUA Thunder 2 ATX (Dual PII drool) and a new ATX 2.01 compliant case. My friend was happy becuase he was able to upgrade to a PII 350.

The Final PII 300 Mutation

I then started to convert my computer to all SCSI, since I had a Adaptex 78xx Dual Ultra Wide SCSI. I had already been using a Adaptec 2940UA for my CD-ROMa and CD-R. I first bought a Seagate Hawk 1Gig Wide SCA. Then I picked up a Seagate Meadalist Pro 4.5Gig UWide. The last thing I got was a Quantum 1.2Gig. I then had enough storage dumb IDE and those two IRQ's.

A New Frontier

My computer had been given me trouble so i narrowed it down to the CPU of MB. I choose the easy way out and sold the MB on eBay (bye bye SMP). I then ordered a discount board from Treasue Chest Computers Super Micro P6SLA, and popped in an Adaptec 2940UW SCSI card I had picked up. I could not get the MB/CPU to work so I said F$%kit and order a Tyan S1846S Tsunami ATX with a PIII 450 and two 64MB PC100 DIMMS.

Out with the New in with the Old

Before I even got the PIII I fixed the MB problem on the PII (Turned off SDRAM autosizing and second DIMM was burnt). I wish I would have found this out sooner. I got the PIII had it up for one day and it died. Had to send it back. Was about a month before I even got the damn thing back. I then had an opurunity to sell the MB and CPU to a friend and I was then going to get a Anthalon(sp) 500 or a PIII 500. At the last minuteI decided to save some money and I got an ABit BP6 Dual Celeron MB and two Celron 366es for over one hundred less then it would have cost me for the Anthalon.

The Aftermath

The last two step actually only covered a couple of months/ So I had a flurry of changes lately. I ordered a Super Micro SC750-A Case, so when that comes in my PII 300 is going go back to it's original case, and get the following:
  • 64MB DIMM CHIP
  • Adaptec 2940UA
  • Diamond Fire GL 1000 PRO 8MB AGP
  • Creative Labs Ensoniq PCI
  • 3COM EtherLink III 3c509B-TPO ISA
  • NEC MultiSpin 6Xi SCSI-2 CD-ROM
  • Quantum 1.2 Gig SCSI-2 HD.

I will probably install Linux, and try to get some Distrubuted Computer lovin' going on.
