Committed suicide on 8 Jul 1997 by shooting himself in the head with a shotgun.
Apparently, no note was left or any reason given for killing himself. His health had been failing after being diagnosed with throat cancer and receiving radiation treatments. Recent discover of more questionable lympth nodes had prompted additional tests. Results were pending. Comment to Vicky indicated that he didn't want to endure more radiation treatments.

===============================
It is believed Carl entered the Army on 14 Aug 1940 at Ft. Knox, Ky. He was assigned to an engineering unit which was probably the 16th Engineer Regiment, outlined below. Carl became ill while serving in Italy and was evacuated back to the US for treatment. It was during this treatment that me met his future wife, Betty. Betty was serving as a nurse in a military facility in Indiana.
On 11 December 1935, the 16th Engineer Regiment was first constituted on the inactive list of the Regular Army. On 15 July 1940, it was redesignated as the 16th Engineer Battalion (Armored), and activated into the 1st Armored Division, at Fort Knox, Kentucky under Captain (General) Bruce C. Clark. The Battalion was redesignated the 16th Armored Engineer Battalion on 1 January 1942. On 8 November 1942, B Company, 16th Armored Engineer Battalion, saw its first action of World War II. During the Algerian-French-Morocco Campaign, B Company assisted the 1st Armored Division in breaching obstacles and crossing shore-side marshes during the initial landing of the Division in Iran, Algeria. Because of theis endeavor, B Company?s guidon displays the silver band with arrowhead. In the Tunisia Campaign, the entire 16th Armored Engineer Battalion soon found itself embroiled in combat engineer operations in the "Kasserine Pass" against Field Marshall Erwin Rommel?s "Afrika Korps". A Company became the first unit of the Battalion to receive its "Baptism of Fire" in the battle at Madjes el Bab, Algeria; it also became the first American unit to lift German "Teller Mines". In 1943, the 16th Armored Engineer Battalion participated in amphibious assaults and desperate fights in the Anzio Campaign as they stormed both the Anzio and Salemo beachheads. It was here that C Company laid over 2300 mines in one night under fog and heavy enemy fire. After the breakout at Anzio, the Battalion then advanced to the Italian peninsula, fighting fiercely in the Naples-Foggia Campaign. The Battalion built, on an average, one bridge every three days to include a 270 foot bridge, under smoke cover, over the Voltumo River, while the enemy pured fire on a demolished bridge just 500 yards downstream. The fighting was fierce through the Rome-Arno Campaign, as the 16th Armored Engineer Battalion pushed northward developing armored combat breaching equipment for the follow-on fight. It was C Company who became one of the first units to enter and occupy Rome. In the North Apennines Campaign, the engineer breaching and bridging effort of the 16th Armored Engineer Battalion became legendary; B Company was commended for the extraordinary feat of constructing 27 bridges in a three month period. In the Po Valley Campaign, the 16th Armored Engineer Battalion led the combat engineer effort of the 1st Armored Division through the foothills and mountains of the Italian Alps. Distinguishing itself through both, Combat Engineer and Infantry actions on Mount Porchia, A Company received the Presidential Unit Citation. The 16th Armored Engineer Battalion, was inactivated at Camp Kilmer, New Jersey on 13 April 1946. On 7 March 1951, the Battalion was reactivated under command of the 1ST Armored Division, Fourth Army, at Fort Hood, Texas.

Betty Mae Herbert

Betty died unexpectedly on 13 Nov 1995. Apparently had heart failure
at about 4:00 PM while searching for baskets in her garage. Husband, Carl
discovered the body after returning from getting the mail and paper from in
front of the house. Betty had a history of heart problems and other related
illnesses.

Thomas family rumor was that Ollie was seeing Modine (second wife) while still
