Sunday afternoon, August 27, 1917, a tornado which started in Arkansas, crossed the river into Tennessee and entered Kentucky at about where the C.M. & G. Railroad entered the state struck the "lower bottom" with much destruction and loss of life. The twister seemed to follow the railroad in its path of destruction, on its way to Hickman. It passed over the Mengel Box Company causing much damage and headed up the river to Hickman County. Passing through the "upper bottom" it came straight at the church, then circled it, going on its way. Much damage to property occurred in Hickman, power and communication lines were down and the community was sorrow stricken.
The Mengel Box Company came to Hickman about 1901. It started with about 35 acres of land, a river frontage of 600 feet, and employed about 100 men. In 1929 ti was the larges woodworking plant in West Kentucky and covered approximately 90 acres. The main plant consisted of a band mill, veneer mill, and panel plant. Most of the logs used were brought from the companies holdings along the river by their towboats and barges. All the lumber and plywood was shipped out by rail. The veneer mill burned in February of 1924 and within 5 weeks a new mill was built and in operation. The Mengel was in business here about 41 years and at its closing employed about 850 people in its entire operation. Due to a fire in the fall of 1942 which destroyed the plant and a shortage in timber the company decided to close the Hickman operation. Many of the employees were transferred to Baton Rouge, Louisana to a Mengel plant and the others looked for work elsewhere. This was a severe blow to Hickman.
By the turn of the century, Hickman was becoming a prominent community. With the advent of the Mengel Box Company the town grew and improvements were make.

Monday near Caneyville
Bus crash claims 3 lives, injures 4
By Dave Para
A mid-morning, light rain apparently claimed the lives of three people and injured four Monday, as Tri-State bus, enroute from Paducah to Louisville, crashed on U.S. Route 62 at Dog Creek Road, about three miles west of Caneyville.
Dead are William Cantor (sic), 39, of Wingo, and Marylin Johnson, 41 of Riverside, California. Both were found dead at the scene of the accident. Mira E. Johnson, 69, of Greenville, Ky., was pronounced dead on arrival at Grayson County Hospital. All three died from multiple injuries.
The four survivors, later taken to Louisville Hospital, were Justin Blane, 78, and his wife, Gladys, 72 of Huntsville: Helen Owens, 58, from Madisonville, and the bus driver, Thomas Johnson, 47, of Mayfield. Mrs. Owens and Johnson were treated for multiple fractures, and Johnson suffered
a punctured lung. Both were in stable condition at the Louisville hospital Tuesday.Mrs. Blane was in the coronary care unit and listed in serious condition. She was also treated for multiple fractures. Her husband, Justin was treated for minor injuries and was released.
The bus was due to arrive in Leitchfield at 10:10 a.m. Monday, which is when the Leitchfield Fire Department was dispatched to the accident. The rescue squad was also called out upon the report that victims were still trapped inside the wreckage. The Caneyville Fire Department also answered
the call, as well as three ambulances and three county patrol units.A definite account of the accident was not available at this time, as Thomas was reportedly in and out of consciousness during the rescue and could not report the events. Grayson County Deputy Ray Marrillia said it is believed the bus lost control at Dog Creek Road curve on the wet pavement.
The rear of the bus then fish-tailed completely around, and the bus struck a large tree on the left side of the road, which broke the vehicle in two and sent the larger part crashing down the bank of Dog Creek. All of the victims, except for Justin Blane, were thrown from the wreckage, and debris
was scattered 100 feet from the bus.Althrough most of the fire fighters called had returned home by noon, it was not until 4:30 p.m. that the wreckage could be removed from the area.
