Pumpkin Patch Pedal

Georgia and I did out first tour on our new tandem (bought in july from Tandems East -- how do you like the free ad, Mel?). Half-century in perfect weather. The first half of the ride was fast and fun. It was fun counting the number of single bikes we passed. On one flat section, we cruised at 24 mph. Wheeee! Left all the single bikes behind. The second half was... well, why focus on that. Can I tell you again about the first half?
Hillier Than Thou

79.6 miles, 6940 feet total climbing, 6 hours 8 minutes ride time.
Fell short of the target century on my first attempt of Hillier. Had to bail out and take the short cut after the third rest stop at the Four Sister's Winery. Timmy was still fresh, just spinning the steepest hills with his magic gear of 24x27, but I was already suffering. At that point, we already had about 4,000 feet total climbing. The rest stop guy assured us the short cut would be flat. It turned out there were still 3,000 feet more of climbing. But we did avoid taking the nasty walls of the full century, including the infamous Fiddler's Elbow (38% grade!).
The green line in the graph below is the altitude graph. The twin peaks in the middle show the hill we climbed twice going forth, u-turn and back. The red graph is heart rate, white is ascent percentage, blue is speed, black would have been cadence but my cadence sensor was not working during that ride.
