My Say:
Thank God that my final year project presentation was completed without any major hitches. The days before the presentation had been stressful and tensed as I had to rush the hardware experiments, create the Powerpoint slides and also read up on the theorectical aspects of the project. Here, I would like to extend my gratitude to my supervisor, Prof. Satya Prasad Majumder, who despite his own hectic and busy schedule, have helped me tremendously in the days preceding the presentation. He's truly a wonderful supervisor!

Here are some brief information on the contents of my presentation:

Project Title: Design and Development of a Direct Detection Optical Trans-Receiver
Objectives:

• To design and implement a digital fiber optic trans-receiver with intensity modulation and direct detection.
• To apply the optical trans-receiver in digital communications between two computers.

Fiber optic trans-receivers (transmitter and receiver modules) are to be designed and fabricated for transmission of intensity modulated digital signals. The transmitter will be designed to modulate a LED diode (850nm) with intensity modulation at a bit rate of 20Mbits/sec. The receiver will be direct detection type with an PIN photodiode.

Theoretical background: Advantages of Optical Communications

• Ability to carry much more information and deliver it with greater fidelity.
• Can support much higher data rates and at greater distances.
• Great potential transmission bandwidth (~25000GHz).
• Immune to virtually all kinds of interferences.
• Smaller and lighter in weight.
• Secure communication systems.
• Made of glass, it will not corrode and is unaffected by most chemicals.
