VMS Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

The FAQ supply most useful information to the VMS user, programmer or system manager.

• The place to start is the Info-VAX FAQ collection. It is maintained by Steve Lionel. Archive locations are http://www.openvms.compaq.com/wizard/openvms_faq.htm , ftp://ftp.digital.com/pub/Digital/dec-faq/vms and ftp://rtfm.mit.edu/pub/usenet/news.answers/dec-faq/vms . There are also many other places on the web where you can find it:
  • In HTML form: Mike Rechtman has a frames version of the VMS FAQ. Originally here, on his pages in this GeoCities neighbourhood. Now copied to Eisner.DECUS.org. Those who don't like frames should look at the VMS FAQ at GSI, Germany or the VMS FAQ at KJSL.
  • Plain text: Oxford University (http) / ftp://ftp.tay.ac.uk/vms/vms-faq.txt (ftp, University of Abertay Dundee)
• For newbies there is an OpenVMS beginner's FAQ (local copy, last update 29-Jan-1998) by David Mathog. The original version is kept at Caltech. It may be more up to date.
• A collection of various OpenVMS FAQs at the University of Toledo, Ohio (mainly for their own users)
• The OpenVMS Internet Product Suite FAQs cover topics like Netscape Navigator performance, Java etc.
• The FAQs about OpenVMS at http://www.partner.digital.com/ cover topics like $CREATE_BUFOBJ System Service (Usage), Ethernet Address (Methods of Determination), Shareable Images (Cookbook approach to creating one), Sharing Data/Code at Absolute Addresses (a guide with examples), Determining the Alpha microprocessor, etc.
