Sri Lankan Time : |
It's easy to think of Sri Lanka as just an offshoot of India - a miniature, tropical island India where the people are Buddhist, not Hindu, and there aren't so many of them. This is a complete misconception, for Sri Lanka is nothing like India. It's a totally different place and enormously appealing. In fact it's hard to disagree with Macro Polo's Impression that this is the finest island in the world - for no matter what you want Sri Lanka is likely to have it.
Beaches? - the coastal stretch south of Colombo has beach after beach as beautiful as anywhere in the world.
Culture? - try the Kandyan dances or the demon mask dances for size.
Ruins? - if you like ruins you'll find your fill in the ancient cities of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Dambulla.
Scenery? - head for the hill country where the heat of the plains and the coast soon fade away.
Wildlife? - they say you can see leopards in the national parks; I did! All this comes with friendly people, good food, pleasent places to stay and reasonably low costs in a handy compact pakage.
