He used to be a gamekeeper for a noble family somewhere in the area wherever he is. Basically, his job was to protect the noble family's game preserve, keeping poachers, wanderers and predators out so that the nobles could have plenty of deer, wild boar, kine, fox and other sporting animals to hunt at their leisure whenever they felt the desire. Dern is a hunter, not a killer.

Dern wears simple garb. His boots are high quality brown leather, thick soled and lined inside with suede. His trousers are dark, and his tunic is long sleeved and green. His cloak is made from the hides of two wolves, the heads are stiched together along the jaw line to create the hood The clasp of the cloak is the shin bone of a deer, dove tailed and pinned with a bronze bar. He wears a three inch wide belt about his waist, dyed black and clasped with a bronze buckle.
