Subject: latest browsers?
Where do we cut off browser compatibility? I tend to think that 1 version
back of the current release is good as a general rule. I wonder what the
motivation is to upgrade your browser if pages look good on Netscape 2?
I
realize some people don't upgrade either becuase they don't know how or
their base computer systems don't have the resources (though I personally
believe neither is a valid excuse). Where do we draw the line? 95%
compatibility? 80%? 51%
I get the impression from anecdotal evidence that the overwhelming
majority of browsers accessing pages are NS3+ or IE3+. Thats what I
design most web pages for (my job is all Netscape environment so that is
easy).
Am I missing the point?

Yes please give us the list info. I only get 400-600 messages per day
so I'm not quite saturated yet :-).

Yalcin,
I'm not sure, but what may be happening in the case where you quickly
mouse from one link to another is that the first document.close() line may
not be executing before the second document.open(). Netscape may have a
problem with trying to open a document that is technically still open.
One possible way to avoid this would be to call document.close() before
you
call document.open() in the function. However, I'm not sure that this
really addresses the problem.
>From what it looks like you just want to change an image in another
frame. If this is the case, all you need to do is use a standard rollover
that references the image in that other frame. If it is more complex than
this, you may need to go to the lengths that you mention.
P.S. I would change the first "</html>" to "<html>"
in the code sample
you included.

I was a good little listmember and emailed these off list, but I see
there are more requests for them so here they are!
Sun's user interface design center

lead by Jakob Nielsen at http://www.useit.com
http://www.acm.org/sigchi/listserv/request.html
a list of all the
Association for Computing Machinery's listserves (same people who do
SIGGRAPH)...I think the one I subscribed to is the "Web: HCI Issues

the Web" one
enjoy! They'll make you think about your work in a whole new way.

Here's a quiet site with rollovers...
Info is hidden, but not "just because" we could, instead to
give the
site some white space. To give some reverence to the photographs being
featured.
If the java script does not work, the user can still navigate via the
html links a the bottom of the page. So, the answer to Ben's survey
- --Do you use the JavaScript or Java or Plug-in technologies to display
crucial information, unobtainable in any other manner?-- would be no for
me. And I probably won't until browsers are more standardized.
This is a fun and useful thread. Thanks for the good converstion.

<confusion> What!?!
No [babble] about PNGs!?!
</confusion>
I've been wanting to play around with PNGs since the PNGLive plugin was
promised to be bundled with the 4.0 browsers. The 4.0 browsers are here,
and now it's time to =USE= !
Ought to make an apt match with DHTML!
Anyone out there have any experience they'd like to share with the rest
of
us, like how to get transparency/translucency with PNGs using photoshop?
What do the settings "sub, up, average, Paeth, adaptive" do?
Way too
little documentation in the Photoshop manual. I've played around with only
marginal success. I tried opening a PNG in NN4.01 window (a while back)
and got the thing scaled to fill the window (try it, it still works with
4.03)! I think you have to use embed tags, using PNGs in img tags
breaks'em.
What other tools (share/free) are out there (and which ones do you like
to
use) to take advantage of the wonders of this great "new" format?
What
about MNGs (animated PNGs)??
>From a cursory look, things seem a /little/ limited for Mac users...
Throw some URLs at us, please!
I've poked around at http://www.siegelgale.com/png/
and http://codelab.siegelgale.com/solutions/learn_index.html
and http://www.webreview.com/97/05/09/feature/index.html
and http://www.webreview.com/97/05/09/feature/pngeditors.html
Wow! Just found this...
right-click(pc) or command-click(mac) the images at:
http://codelab.siegelgale.com/solutions/samples_index.html
shaweet! (if I just had a little more time...)
...And then to answer a few of my own questions...
a long, but good thread at:
http://129.12.200.129/ftp/pub/png/png-group/archives/png-list.9704
and http://www.cdrom.com/pub/png/
http://www.w3.org/TR/png.html
http://www.w3.org/Graphics/PNG/inline-alpha
(Unfortunately I haven't been able to throw time at playing with PNGs
since
they are not win3.1-friendly, and we are still trying to support win3.1
in
our products.)

Re: So, we have a number of divergent views about the utility of rollovers!
Perhaps what is missing is an example of a truly unique application.
Check this: <http://www.BennettGold.ca/>
and click through any of the
image links.
This is a perfect example of how technology can serve a logical rather
than
a gratuitous purpose in an information based site. But there are many ways
that applications can be useful. Every now and then I surf over to the MTV
site, which takes eons to load, just to see what cool new java they are
showing. There are sites just out there to be cutting edge. The web has
endless possibilities. I agree that the end resuts and the intended audience
should determine the use of bells and whistles. But bells and whistles
are
still fun and finding new eye candy is a great pleasure for me.
