Mr. Jones:

I believe there exists an HTTP header called "cache-control : no-cache" that will
do what you are requesting, but sysadmin/network admin is way out of my league.

On a related note: we have noticed that sometimes Netscape does not display
updated pages even when the client flushes its cache. We have not determined
exactly where the problem lies. Here is an example:

An html file contains a specific graphic file that resides on the server. The
image file is replaced on the server with the new version. Netscape continues to
display the old version despite the client cache being dumped. This has happened
on NS 3 and 4. And it is not just related to image files, but Java applets and
Javascripts as well.

Apparently this behavior happens even if another client accesses the new file
without ever having accessed the original file.

We believe it is a problem with our proxy server (Solaris on Sun), but we are
investigating.

I'm no specialist on this, just relaying on what was discussed by our sysadmin and
application development team this morning.

Some time back there was a discussion on this list about banding together as
designers to get users to upgrade their browsers. At least I think it was on
this list. I get confused, sometimes. Then I drink coffee, and a strange
calm... but I digress.

At any rate, I've come up with one way to try to convince users to upgrade
at my home page. I invite all interested parties to take a look-see:

Dear list,
As I am making plans to buy that palette board from R35, I was wondering
if there is a giant board I can put in my office that has the uniform
JavaScript code that is the same in IE and NS.

Thanks,
Gil Kruger

Netscape is Free!

You can now download, distribute, or bundle Netscape with your products!

Source code is also freely available.
(now I can fix the bugs I complain about... if only I knew how:)

Here's what I got in email from DevEdge. (and no, I don't work for them)

More info:

It turns out that this only disables the cacheing (sp?) of the HTML file,
not the images or movies embeded in that page, which is what we need.

This is probably the root of the image cacheing problem that you describe.
The HTML is not cached, but the image is. The user would have to
shift-reload to get the more recent image. (You could also pass the image
through a cgi to attach a http header that contains a no-cache directive to
the image... but this is time/computationally costly)

I thought that Netscape checked all files for the most recent version, but
it may well just check HTML files.

A little something I found in the meanwhile:
for anyone else who's interested... (sound of crickets)

LiveCache
http://search.netscape.com/comprod/products/navigator/version_3.0/ease/cache/ind
ex.html

LiveCache says to try using LiveCache and including the following tag:
<META HTTP-EQUIV="Ext-cache"
CONTENT="name=MyCache;instructions=Instructions to Your User">

I'm not at all sure what is involved in this, just tought I'd post it.

Thanks again, and I hope this helps-
Egan

The most straightforward way would be to link to a page which sets up the
appropriate frames then loads the targetted page. Basically, duplicate the
frames code from your main index page, but instead of loading the title page,
have it load the logo page.

I had the same problem with a client, http://fotografia.las.es/ccasa
and it
was due to the netscape configuration (the "use my default color, not
the page's background").
(Don't try to find background in the actual pages, I dropped it).
