Subject: hotmail purchase...
While some were out partying and having a good time this holiday season,
Bill you-know-who was out doing the acquisiton thing (again/still).
Microsoft has purchased HotMail, the privately-held Sunnyvale, CA,
Web-based provider of free electronic email. The service, never truly
profitable (not enough ads sold to cover cost?), started in the summer
of 1996 and has approximately 10 million active users.
Although Microsoft hasn't disclosed the purchase price, industry sources
peg it at approximately U$395 million. According to Shirish Nadkarni,
MSN's director of product planning says "The primary reason for the
acquisition is the technology". Apparently Microsoft was impressed
by
Hotmail's ability to handle significant quantities of email without
problems.
Can anyone guess what the new ads blasting Hotmail users will be? I
myself use, and mostly don't mind Microsoft products, but I wonder if
RocketMail is braced for an onslaught of defecting email users who
aren't fans of the company.

Has anyone anything to say, positive or not, about the W3C's browser/
editing tool, Amaya?
According to the W3C:
"Amaya is a Web client that acts both as a browser and
as an authoring tool. It has been designed with the primary
purpose of being a testbed for experimenting and demonstrating
new specifications and extensions of Web protocols and standards."

Subject: tech: image spacing in a table
Hi all,
I am having a problem with some seemingly random pixels intruding on
my
table layout. I will try and describe my problem as best as I can but it
may be easiest just to look at the problem http://www.humboldt.edu/~beg1/
(the table is on the middle green frame in the section 'résumé
a la web').
I have five small images stacked on top of each other all with the same
code structure, but between some of the images (on the white between the
2/3 and 4/5) there is a one or two pixel length space. The weird thing is
that you can only see this on a PC (as far as I can tell) my assumption
is
because of the lower resolution monitor. I am using JavaScript in the
table, but I wouldn't imagine that would effect it because the JavaScript
didn't distort all the images. Any ideas? I would also appreciate any
comments or suggestions you may have on the design as well. Thanks.

I have just started working with HighFive, an I have seen 5-6 cover
submissions in as many days. I'm not sure yet if that is the normal
amount. A gallery is a good idea and we plan on doing a comprehensive
archive for the site with covers and much more. I will also be posting
more about myself in the news so people know who I am : )
I will pass your suggestion around and see what sort of reaction it gets.
thanks, Dana!
