Building a Ghillie Suit

Materials-

4-5 Rolls of Brown and Green Burlap (depending on season, etc.)

Several 1/2 Rolls of Assorted Highlight Colored Burlap

2 Square Inch Netting (10x5 ft. or so)

Stout Thread

Needle

Boonie Hat/Helmet Cover/Tanker's Hood

Shoe Goop

Base (Flight Suit, BDU's, etc.)

Pistol Holster (optional)

Camelback or the like (optional)

1/8" Closed Cell Foam

Water Proof Dark Colored Canvas

Velcro

Pre First Phase- Prep

You need to think about customizing your suit before you start. Do you want a Camelback in it? If so, now is the time to do it. Do you want a cooler suit? Cut out a square in the back and sew in camo mesh or the like. There's thousands of options to think about before you start your ghillie suit.

First Phase-

Lay your base chest down onto the floor. Lay the netting on top of the base the way you want it to be sewn onto the base. Sew one side of every square on the edges of the base all the way around. Some people sew EVERY side/intersection of sides onto the base, including the entire back, etc. I chose not to do this because it makes it eaiser to stick vegitation in the suit with less movement, however, the vegitation doesn't stay in as well. Once you have the outline sewn onto the base, cut the netting around the base; be sure to leave at least 2 inches of netting hanging over on all sides of the suit. Also, be sure to leave enough netting around the arms to wrap some around to cover the front of your arms if you choose; another thing to keep in mind is if you want you're hood to always remain on your suit, leave netting in the approiate areas. You now have a solid foundation.

Second Phase-

Cut the brown and green burlap into strips 12-16 inches long in a 3 to 2 ratio green to brown or brown to green depending on the enviornment it will be used in. once you have 30 strips of one color and 20 of the other, tie on all the strips. Tie one strip on to every 2 inch section of netting. Repeat this until the entire suit is covered with entire strips of burlap.

Tie on the highlight colors in strips 12-16 inches long where needed and shred these. Also, sew in the typ hood you're going to use onto the netting. I use a boonie hat but you can also use a G.I. Helmet cover, one of those mesh "sniper face veils", anything else you can think of.

Note: Some people choose to leave the strips whole and not shred them. Personally, I choose to shred. However, a suit in the second stage can be quite effective, as this pic of my current suit-in-progress proves (same suit as shown above except completed phase 2) (no vegitation used).

Third Phase-

Shred all the burlap strips by pulling out the horizontal strands of burlap. There are several different meathods of doing this quickly; just find the style that works best for you and continue doing it until the entire suit has been shreded. Wash the suit. Dry it in a drier for 20 min. and allow to drip dry for 24 hours. Take it outside and shake it out several times. The burlap shreds probably rolled up and you need to unroll and spread them out.

Fourth Phase-

Sew the canvas around the foam in the shape of the pads desired. Sew velcro strips onto the back of these pads. Sew velcro strips onto the appropriate spots on the suit to affix tha pads.

Fifth Phase (optional-)

This is the stage to do any customization work on the suit you want. You can place drops of shoe goop onto the shoulder for a secure rifle hold. Shoe goop a plastic card cover onto a sleeve and slide in ballistic data. Do what works for you.

NOTES-

A ghillie suit is a custom made suit for YOUR needs. Make it as you need it to be. There is NO correct way to make a ghillie suit. It is all personal preferance and the suits constantly evolve. I suggest making several suits before you get one that you want to stick with (unless you are a professional, but then, why read this?); for example- my first suit was crap compared to my second suit. My second suit was crap compared to my third suit (which I will try to get some pictures of up). Just make it the way you want it. This may require going against some of these directions. This is just meant to be a guide for those who may want to try to build a suit. Also, most suits are very versitle- This pic is my primary spring suit, but since my fall suit is under construction, I have to use it in the fall. As you can see, it is still quite effective (more than normal fatigues anyway) if you use vegitation (target not visible from camera angle-- at the time I was shooting as 200 yards). Allen Stringfellow's grassland suit also shows this (pics at the bottom of the page). This is just the way I build mine. If you do build one using these directions, lemme know how it turns out.

F.Y.I. : I had most of the info for this page e-mailed to me (not to say I couldn't have written it and don't know how to make one). It saved me a lot of time in writing it, all I had to do was edit it. If anyone knows who wrote the original or where it came from, pleez mail me.
