From Tago Beach I view the sight,
Above the clouds, of Fuji's brow
Sublime, all covered with the white
Of snow that seems there falling now.
                                    YAMABE-NO AKAHITO
***
Out in the field of spring I go
To gather young herbs for your sake,
But now, alas, here comes the snow
To wet my coat-sleeves with its flake.
                                    THE EMPEROR KOKO
***
The double cherry blossoms, lo,
    Of Nara, the ancient capital,
Now in the Imperial Palace blow,
Glorious and sweet before us all.
                                    THE LADY ISE-NO OHSUKE
***
How the village friend may meet me
I know not, but the old plum flowers
Still now with their fragrance greet me
Kindly as in the bygone hours
                                    KINO TSURAYUKI
***
I hear a cuckoo in the sky,
But when I seek to spot the call,
Only the morning moon's on high,
And of the bird no sign at all.
                                    GOTOKUDAIJI SANESADA
***
Spring is already gone and now
It seems the summer's come, for lo,
All white is yonder Kagu's brow
With garments airing row on row.
                                    THE EMPRESS JITO
***
The day soon breaks in summer tide
    Even while night seems young as yet;
And does the moon forlornly ride
Cloud-hidden till it comes to set?
                                    KIYOWARA-NO FUKAYABU
***
Though cool the breeze athwart the trees,
I see some bathers in the stream.
But for their sight in this twilight,
Spring is the season it would seem.
                                    IYETAKA
***
Cold the autumn wind is blowing,
Scattering the dew about the lea.
And here I see the gusts now sowing
    Rare unstringed pearls free.
                                    BUNYA-NO ASAYASU
***
How fair the Tatsua, for lo,
    Was the stream ever carpeted,
Even when Gods were here below,
With such bright maple-leaves and red?
                                    ARIWARA-NO NARIHIRA
***
The year's first frost this morning fell,
And I who seek some flowers white
Of my chrysanthemums can't tell
The blossom from the rime aright.
                                    OSHIKOCHI-NO MITSUNE
***
Of all the seasons of the year
    Winter in mountain hamlets bare
Is the most forlorn and dear,
Since men and grass then are so rare.
                                    MINAMOTO-NO MUNEYUKI
