One of the world's great religions is Buddhism. Many millions of the people of Asia are Buddhists. The follow the teachings of Buddha.
Buddha lived about 2,500 years ago, five centuries before Christ. This great leader was born in India. His father was a king. His mother was a daughter of the king. The boy was named Siddhartha Gautama. Later he was called Buddha. “Buddha” means “Enlightened One”.
Buddha had a happy boyhood. He lived in palace and was not allowed to see how sad the lives of the poor people round about were. He married when he was 19, but he and his young wife went on living in the palace, shut of from the rest of the world.
It was not until Buddha was 29 that he found out that there was a great deal of suffering in the world. He decided then to give up his life of ease. He would try to help people bear their sorrows.
Buddha went into the mountains. Little by little he worked out his ideas of what people should believe and how they should live. After several years in the mountains Buddha come down to the crowded plains. For 45 years he went among the people teaching them to be kind and to bear their sorrows meekly. He was greatly loved.
In the cities of Asia today here are thousands of Buddhist temples. There are statues of Buddha in every one. Return to "Lili's Lita/Sailor Jupiter Shrine"
