Dear Regina,
please, don't think that I, wife of Tad from Geocities, one of participants
of
your stormy discussion, can't be in such a situation impartial. What's
more, I
suppose that I've got the same experiences under the front "Your Language
on the
Queens Board" as you've got. When I had sent there my two messages
(actually
archived) appeared a few messages probably bringing into disrepute
just mine.
Their indecency didn't deserve my smallest comment. Fortunately they
disappeared after a dozen hours or so. This is a sad task of the editorial
staff
of our Queens Board. How then I see your discussion?
You write in your first message "offensive", "unacceptable words".
It's clear.
Worries begin with "innuendoes" and "adults". Ordinarily we like to
behave like
children but we don't like if someone says it to us. So don't wonder
that your
readers have taken up cheerfully the word innuendo in the meaning "sexual
allusion" and not in the meaning "an indirect remark, gesture, or reference,
usually implying something derogatory" (College Edition Webster's New
World
Dictionary of the American Language. The World Publishing Company,
Cleveland and
New York, 1962, p. 754 - My dictionary of years 1961-1962 in Washington,
D.C.
and of years 1963-1964 in Queens). My classmate in years 1966-1970
in Faculty of
Law and Administration, Adam Mickiewicz University (and from 1970 my
husband),
in his first message tried without avail to emphasize this law meaning.
This
distinctly more popular meaning he's picked up just lately after the
pean for
the law meaning done by Steve from Orsa in his second message. Additionaly
my
husband has taken a stress on "remember that minors...".
The entertaining thread have wanted to continue Fred DAGENAIS but Marc
S.
remembered him gently that only advanced in years... Do you think,
Regina, that
Marc S. is also against you?
I'm sure that you've taken the initiative in doing very good work.
Best regards,
