In my school time every pupil could receive medals, certificates,
awards and
pins within the framework of: Mathematics, Science, Art, French, Spanish,
Social
Studies, English, Graphic Arts, Woodworking, Electric, Metal, Ceramics,
Millinery, Sewing, Child Care, Home Economics, PTA, Health Education,
Citizenship, Glee Club and The Music Department. Every pupil could
also receive
Honor Scholarship and Safety Award. Today I should like to tell about
Borough
Science Fair. At the ninth-grade awards assembly on June 24, 1963,
third Group
Prize of $20 went to David Isaacson and John Fleishman of 9-305. A
certificate
of participation was given to George Lancer, 9-313 and Alan Schweitzer,
9-317
("Semaphore". Daniel Beard J.H.S. 189, Queens. June 1963. Vol. VI,
Number 3,
page 3). On the subject of this science fair my then Official Teacher,
Mrs. Mona
Abel said, "The science fair inspires children to do independant research
and
seek the truth in their investigations. In this way, pupils can appreciate
how
exciting science is." (Science Fair. 2 Beard Students Second in Boro
Fair. by
Monica Hecht and Linda Becskehazy "Semaphor", op.cit., April 1963,
Vol. VI,
Number 11, page 1). For me personally more memorable was the next science
fair.
In "Daniel Carter Beard Bulletin" March 1964, Volume II, Issue V, you
can read
"We are very proud of our students who will have their science projects
shown at
the Borough-Wide Exhibit at Forest Hills High School on April 11th
from 9:30 to
12:30. The students whose entries will be on display are Jacqueline
Zuber,
Gravitational Behavior; Neal Siegel, Transistor Oscillator; Richard
Krauss and
James Freedgood, Ozone Generator; Myrna Jacobson, Conquest of Infection;
Eugenia
and Lidia Misiura, Ants; Cheryl Schwartz, Effects of Hormones on Plants.
Our
sincere congratulations to them all."
