jjvisuals / Freelance Graphic Designer

(1996 to present)

Print design projects are managed from concept to pre-press production to final print. Web design projects include conceptualization, development, testing and implementation. Services provided include consulting, training, art direction, graphic design, layout, digital pre-press preparation, simple website design and maintenance.

California Casualty Management Co. / Graphic Designer / Print & Web Coordinator
(06/ 2001 to 03/2005)
As the in-house full-time graphic designer/one person “shop” for this company, I designed and managed production of print projects, from conception to final product, such as marketing materials, newspaper & magazine ads, newsletters, style guides, educational materials, manuals, Shareholder Reports, Annual Reports, internal forms, handling updates, revisions and creating new assets. I worked closely with the marketing department, internal & external clients, printers, contract graphic designers, and other vendors to coordinate workflow and fulfill project goals. This included related responsibilities such as price quoting on projects, print buying, sales of department services to the many small businesses & startups who were tenants in the employer's buildings, freelance projects, re-designing and maintaining the departmental website, and working with vendors to design and implement service websites in order to update, improve, and manage costs effectively for clients throughout the company.

WebSwap.com / Web Designer / Producer
(02/ 2000 to 12/ 2000)
As part of the Web Development team, I worked closely with engineers, product managers, copy editors, business developers, marketing and outside vendors to design, optimize, implement, and test the Web site for a variety of platforms and browsers. This included the development and introduction of many new features and a redesign of the site. I conceptualized user interface and information design issues, using a combination of Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash and/or Fireworks to create mockups, prototypes, and wireframes to provide a visual presentation of site layout & flow; integrated design solutions with the site’s look & feel with BBEDit to hand code HTML for integration with the engineering team’s Java programming to create dynamic web pages, resolved usability issues, conducted quality control testing, while driving production to meet deadlines. I also produced print projects and emails for marketing materials and direct mail. This was an aggressive e-commerce startup, utilizing a patent-pending matching engine and an Oracle database driven product. Development was accomplished in a Mac / PC / Sun / Solaris / JSP / Java environment.

College of San Mateo / Student
(1994 to present)
After many years working in business-finance oriented jobs, I chose to return to school to redirect my life back into a graphically oriented path. I completed courses in the Multimedia / Technical Arts and Graphics Program and do continue an ongoing investment of time in classes to keep my skills updated. In addition to graphic design software related courses, studies have included: Web design, interface and navigation design, site usability, copy writing, business aspects and production.

Sometimes you have to make a living...yet I am able to utilize the sales, marketing and business management skills from the following jobs as invaluable assets in my current graphic design career:

California Federal Bank / Finance Officer
(1989 to 1994)
A fast paced commissioned sales and marketing position requiring extreme customer service. I juggled many hats and utilized my people skills to satisfy my customers and coordinate the efforts of many individuals needed to originate, process and close mortgage home loans throughout the Bay Area and maintain my status as one of the top 5 officers for volume and dollars in California. I often supplemented the generic company marketing materials by producing my own collateral materials with desktop publishing software.

Bank of America / Customer Service Officer
(1988 to 1989)
I functioned as the sales office manager and assisted in the startup of this new department. I supported the marketing efforts of the real estate loan officers and organized open houses and social events to promote our products throughout the Bay Area as well as installing, configuring and maintaining a networked pc to track our customer base, sales and budgets.
