News

Mainly just an addition to let you know that I am still here. Quite a bit of news but unfortunately no new releases. As part of my degree at the Northern Territory University I am converting Note to run under MacOS X, the new OS from Apple. As a side effect it runs under Windows NT as well. Quite a nifty side effect really... Here are the features that will be in the final version.

  • Non-urgent messages.
  • Logging of all conference and message activity.
  • Better User selection.
  • Correct names, no longer uses your machine name instead uses your login name.
  • Uses TCP/IP. You're no longer restricted to AppleTalk networks, you can now talk to anyone anywhere.

This version has undergone a name change as well it is now called WanTalk. It will be finished by about the 20th of November. Expect a release soon after that. Unfortunately, this version is incompatible with earlier Mac-only versions. A Mac version should be coming next year, hopefully.

Note 2.0.1 released! This fixes a bug with Note on non-MacOS 8 Power Macs, also a bug with longer named Macs not appearing in the user selection list and the user selection list not scrolling.
To upgrade to Note 2.0.1 you do not have to replace version 2.0 of the receiver, or your preferences.

The Register application for Note is now available for separate download from this web site. This is in case you wish to register Note but have lost the Register application.

I will be soon starting work on the next version of Note. At the moment the features I plan on adding are as follows. Not all of these features will be in the immediately next version, but they will be added sometime in the future. This is roughly the order in which I will work on them.

  • Non-urgent messages. These would appear in a small floating window on the screen and they wouldn't take over your entire Mac. You could have multiple ones of these on your screen at once.
  • Message log. This would keep track of all the messages you receive and who from. Including messages you refuse.
  • Better zone interface. Make the user selection on a multiple zone network look more like the MacOS 8 Finder list view, with collapsible zones.
  • Allow better names. Instead of using the name of the machine, allow the user to set the name in Note.
  • TCP/IP support. Instead of using AppleTalk for communication use TCP/IP. This will be the first step in moving to other platforms.
