MODification Chip Installation

WARNING: Make sure you take 'Static Discharge' precautions. Also, if you use 'wire cutters' make sure you do so gently; as the "click" when the cutters close, can cause a 'potential energy' rise; sufficient to destroy the chip. This can be minimised if you use the 'scissor action' type, rather than the 'pinch action' type. Also, make sure you disconnect the machine from ANY power source BEFORE attempting the following procedures. Please note that fine soldering is required, much finer than the average electronics 'kit-type' project. If you are not confident with 'S M D' devices; we suggest you have a qualified technician perform the modification.

[1] Removing the PSX cover:

Turn the unit over and remove all the black screws.

Turn the unit 'right side up', and lift the cover off.

[2] Removing the Laser Unit:

WARNING: When pulling on cables or connectors - do so gently

Disconnect the Ribbon Cable Connector by pulling "straight up" [NOT on the cable itself]. Now disconnect the Ribbon Cable by pulling "straight up". ie: you MUST release the Connector first - before attempting to pull out the cable itself. On more recent models there is no connector and you can therefore remove the Ribbon Cable directly. Disconnect the 4 wire connector [ 3 gray, 1 white ] by pulling "straight up". Disconnect the Rainbow Coloured Harness of Wires by pulling "straight up". Gently lift off the Laser Unit, and place it somewhere safe.

[3] Removing the Hand Controller and Memory Card Housing:

Remove the screws holding the thin metal bracket in place. Lift off the bracket. Disconnect the Ribbon Cable by pulling "straight up". Now lift off the ' hand controller / memory card' housing. On some newer systems; there are no screws to remove.

[4] Removing the Mainboard Bracket:

Remove the screws holding the bracket in place. Remove the bracket by lifting "straight up". You will now have access to the top of the mainboard.

[5] Removing the mainboard:

Remove the mainboard retaining screws; located along the 'Ports' edge of the mainboard. Lift off the mainboard by pulling "straight up", and turn it over, and place it on your bench. The images at our site; clearly show 'where and how' to install your chip. We recommend placing the chip 'upside down' upon the surface of one of the chips, but you can place it in any sensible position. You can bend the pins down; to lower the 'chip profile' if you wish, but do so gently. Remember to use a 'fine' solder iron tip, and as always "cleanliness cannot be over emphasised".
