Aussie Soldier

Sat I there in darkened field
My blood among the dust and smoke
A noise I hear above the roar
Of soldier not yet battle-broke
He lifts me gently in his arms
And from the field carries me
To haven safe, his US tent
Where English nurse works tirelessly
And after time I heal again
Though madness takes me by its lead
I charge the trenches at the lines
But cannot find what made me bleed
Then through the torment ever sought
A message from my distant lands
No more for me the battle fields
A transfer out, a whole new chance
So without pause and brief goodbyes
I leave the memory of my pain
To home, to all new life and love
But ever shall my thanks remain
