1.Open up Windows Explorer
2.Change directories to C:\WINDOWS\SENDTO
3.Create a shortcut to Notepad or drag its shortcut to this directory.
Now you'll have an easy way to open documents! Another helpful thing to do is to do the same thing with the recycle bin.

Using FIND to Search Across Multiple Drives

When you use Find from the desktop (F3), you can normally only search on one drive. To search across multiple drives and directories, separate your searches with a semicolon (;) For example, to search from the root of C: and the root of D:, you would enter C:\;D:\ as your look in location
To search from different directories, you can enter them as well

Add my own information to General tab of the System Control Panel applet.

When you receive a PC from a manufacturer you may see extra lines of description text and a company logo in the General tab of a System Control Panel applet, and this can be changed or added as follows:

1.Create a bitmap you want with dimensions 180 by 114. Save the picture in the %systemroot%/system32 folder (e.g. d:\winnt\system32) with a name of OEMLOGO.BMP. If the picture is greater than this size then it will be clipped from the top left corner. If it is smaller then a black border will be added.
2.Create the file %systemroot%/system32/OEMINFO.INI (e.g. d:\winnt\system32\oeminfo.ini) with the following format:
[general]
Manufacturer=Dabash Tech Ltd
Model=SuperDuper 1
[Support Information]
Line1=" "
Line2="For support ...."

Quick Access to Your Desktop

How do you access your darn desktop when you have a ton of applications open? Well you could right click on the taskbar and do a minimize all, but that can be slow. Instead:

1.Open a browser window (double-click on "My Computer")
2.If there is no toolbar, select View from the menu and select Toolbar.
3.Then from the dropdown list-box in the toolbar select desktop.
4.Now minimize it and forget about it.
5.The next time you want to access your desktop just click the desktop window on the taskbar.
6.As long as you don't close the window when you shutdown, it will reopen when you start windows again.

Additional Note : You can also drag the Desktop folder to the start menu. Then you just press Ctrl-ESC and click on Desktop

Opening a Files for Editing

Adding an 'Edit' option to HTML Documents Options Menu.

When I double click my *.htm files it always fires up my browser. Well sometimes I want to edit that document instead. I can put Notepad in the Send To Folder to ease this problem. Here is another way to deal with this that is a bit slicker:

1.From Windows Explorer, select View then Options
2.Click the File Types Tab.
3.Select the type you want to add edit for (in my example this would be 'Netscape Hypertext Document' or *.HTM
4.Click the Edit Button.
5.From the Edit File Type panel click the New button.
6.Action is: &Edit, Application used to.... is: c:\windows\notepad.exe %1
7.Click OK, then Close, then Close.

Now when you secondary (right) click an HTML Document select Edit from the menu (or press E) and you are now looking at the source in Notepad.

You can use a similar process for Graphic files (JPG, GIF, etc) to send them to your favorite Graphics program.

Adding NOTEPAD to SENDTO

Create a shortcut to notepad.exe in the C:\WINDOWS\SENDTO directory. Then, you'll have the option to view a files contents by right-clicking it and "sending" to the notepad. Immensely useful for deciphering old set-up files (or .DOC files that aren't Word files, READ.ME etc.)

Lock icons in their place

Here's how to make Windows95 remember your Desktop settings, even if someone comes along and changes everything. The first thing to do is to set up everything the way you want it. Next, select Run from the Start menu, type in REGEDIT and press the Enter key. In the Registry Editor, find
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\currentVersion\Policies\Explorer. Right-click in the right pane and select New/DWORD. Rename the value NoSaveSettings and press the Enter key. Right-click on the new NoSaveSettings item and select Modify. Enter the number 1 in the Value data box. Click on OK and Exit. Now, whenever you restart Windows, your settings will return to their current state.

Fixing Corrupt Registry

If your registry has gotten corrupted, and re-installing Windows95 over your existing version does not fix the problem,
there is a hidden, read-only, system file on the root of your boot drive called SYSTEM.1ST. This is the initial system registry created when you first installed Windows95.

To use this file:

1.Go to your Windows directory
2.Un-Attrib your current SYSTEM.DAT file (attrib -r -s -h system.dat)
3.Copy your current SYSTEM.DAT to something like SYSTEM.BAD file (just in case) 4.Move to your root directory
5.Un-Attrib the SYSTEM.1ST file
6.Copy SYSTEM.1ST to \WINDOWS\SYSTEM.DAT
7.Re-start your system

You will need to install your 32-bit apps and any other programs or changes that modified your system registry but you will not need to go through a new again. Your 16-bit apps should not need to be re-installed since they do not modify the registry. You will also retain your current desktop configuration.
