Defining System Security
To control access to your server, you can implement several of the security measures described
in your User’s Reference, including defining two levels of password protection,
securing diskette access, and a system owner’s name that displays during startup.
Password Overview
Your server provides both a power-on password and an administrator password.
The server displays the Enter password prompt when:
- You enter the Configuration/Setup utility program
- You start the server from a diskette
- An administrator password is the only password set
- A power-on password is the only password and the password prompt is set to On
- Both an administrator and a power-on password are set and the password prompt is set to
On
The server does not display a password prompt when:
- Neither a power-on or administrator password is set
- A power-on password is the only password, the password prompt is set to Off
and the server is not being started from a diskette.
In this case, the server starts, but the keyboard is locked. The keyboard can be unlocked
by entering the power-on password.
The passwords do not appear on the screen as you type them. When you enter the correct
password, OK appears on the screen. If you enter the wrong password,
Incorrect password appears on the screen, and Enter password is again
displayed. After three incorrect attempts, you must turn off the server and start again.
The following table summarizes the levels of security with the different levels of
password protection.
No password set
|
- No password required to start system.
- User can access all choices on the Configuration/Setup menu and can start the Reference
Diskette.
|
Power-on password only
|
- User must enter password to complete the system startup.
- Power-on password provides access to all choices on the Configuration/Setup menu and to the
Reference Diskette.
|
Administrator password
|
- User must enter password to complete the system startup.
- Adminstrator password provides access to all choices on the Configuration/Setup menu and to the
Reference Diskette.
|
Administrator and power-on password
|
- User can enter either password to complete the system startup.
- Adminstrator password provides access to all choices on the Configuration/Setup menu and to the
Reference Diskette. Administrator password can enable the power-on password user to change the power-
on password.
- Power-on password provides access to a limited set of choices on the Configuration/Setup menu,
and provides no access to the Reference Diskette.
