Return to Ripple Tutorial

Making Sequential Images in PhotoPaint.

Create a new grayscale image in PhotoPaint. Make it 256 x 256 pixels in size. Double click on the Fill Tool icon to open the Tool Settings box. Click on the Texture Fill button (the one to the far right) and then click the Edit button to open the Texture Fill dialog box.

Under the words Texture Library, select Samples 5. Scroll down and select the texture called O's. There are also some other textures that will make rings.

At the lower right of the box, set the Shade, Mid-shade, and Light colors to 100%Black, 50%Black, and White, respectively. Lock the colors so that they don't change.

Set # of Rings to 1. Set it to 1 even if you want more than one ripple. PhotoPaint will animate only one ripple at a time. If you want more than one you'll need to add them later using the Paint Mode:Add

Click the Preview button a few times to generate some random ripple patterns. When you find one that's close to what you want, lock the Texture # value.

Adjust the Min and Max ring width % values to control how much area the ripples cover.

Set the Ripples density% to control whether there are a few broad ripples or a lot of narrow ones.
Lock all of these values that you just set so that they don't change.

In order to make the ripples look as if they are moving, we'll need to change the Phase offset +-% value over time. Set this value to 100. Click the Preview button. Then click OK to leave the dialog box. Fill your image with the texture. Be sure that the Tolerance is set to 100%. Save it as Frame01.

Click Edit to return the settings box. Change the Phase offset value to 80. Click OK and fill the image with the new texture. Save it as Frame02.

Repeat this last step for Phase offset values of 60,40,20,0,-20,-40,-60,-80. You don't need to do one for -100 since it is identical to the first image you made. Save these images as Frame03 thru Frame10.

If you want more than one set of ripples, unlock the Texture # value and set the Phase offset to 100. Press Preview to generate another random set of ripples. Press OK to leave the dialog box. Set the Paint Mode to Add. Open the Frame01 image and Fill it with the new ripple. The Add feature will combine the two sets of ripples in the one image. It will also create realistic interference patterns where the waves overlap. Repeat this process for frames 2 thru 10.
