Bach, Johann Sebastian 1685-1750, German
Was born at Eisenach, Thuringia, on March 21, 1685, the yougest child of Johann Ambrosius Bach (1645-95) and Elisabeth Lammerhit (1644-94). He was the most important member of a remarkable family of musicians and the chief representative of the German late baroque period. His contemporaries admired him as an outstanding harpsichordist, organist, and expert on organ-building, but found many of his compositions old-fashioned. |

The family was Flemish in origin, and can be traced back to Antwerp. |

Was born in Salzburg on Jan. 27, 1756. His parents were Leopold Mozart, composer and vice-Kapellmeister to the archbishop of Salzburg, and his wife, Anna Maria, nee Pertl, daugther of an official from St. Gilgen. Of their seven children, only two survived: a daugther, Maria Anna (known as Nannerl), and Wolfgang, who was christened Joannes Chrysostomus Wolfgang Theophilus (in German, Gottlieb, in Latin, Amadeus; later, Mozart himself generally signed his letters and compositions either "W.A. Mozart" or "Wolfgang Amade Mozart"). He thought by many to be the greatest musical genius of all times, was one of the world's three or four leading operatic composers and one of the central figures of the Vinnese classical school. |
Strauss, J. Jr. 1825-1899, Austrian
Was born in Vienna on Oct. 25, 1825, he started his career as a bank clerk, since his father wished him to follow a profession other than music. He studied the violin without his father's knowledge, however, and in 1844 conducted a dance band formed by himself at a Viennese restaurant. In 1849, when his father died, Johann combined his orchestra with his father's and with it traveled all over Europe, including Russia (1865-66) and England (1869), winning great popularity. |

Tchaikovsky, Peter Ilich 1840-1893, Russian
Was born at Votkinsk in the Vyatka Goverment on May 7 (new style; April 25, old style), 1840. He was greatly atttached to his mother, and the tender feminine atmosphere of his early years was rudely broken when he was sent to school in St. Petersburg at the age of eight. In 1852 he entered the School of Jurisprudence, which he left in 1859 to join the Ministry of Justice as a senior clerk. In the meantime he had become an amateur musician and made some attempts at composition. In 1861 he began to study harmony, and the following year he entered the St. Petersburg Conservatory. |

He took holy orders in March 1703 and was known as il prete rosso ("the red priest") because of his auburn hair. He was one of the principal Italian composers of instrumental music of the first half of the 18th century. |
