Skanda (chinese: wei tuo pusa), a Deva (sanskrit: god) general who had vowed to protect the dharma.  After Shakyamuni Buddha entered nirvana, demons stole the Buddha's relics.  Skanda retrieved the relics after defeating those demons.

He is regarded as the protector of the Sangha (Buddhist community).  Skanda's statue/images can often be found near the entrance of the Buddhist temple or standing behind the Maitreya Bodhisattiva (the future Buddha) inside the temple.
