Amitabha Buddha (Amitofo in Chinese; Hoddpagmed in Tibetan; Amida in Japanese) is the "Buddha of Infinite Light."  In Tantric Buddhism, he is one of the five Dhyani Buddhas.  In Mahayana Buddhism, the Pure Land Sect is devoted to Amitabha Buddha, the Lord of the Sukhavati (the "Pure Land" of the West).   Together with his two chief companions (Avalokiteshvara and Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva), they are known as the Three Holy Ones of the West.

Shakyamuni Buddha described Amitabha Buddha's vows and deeds in the Amitabha Buddha Sutra.  Shakyamuni Buddha said there is a Pure Land to the West which is ruled by Amitabha Buddha.  This Pure Land is endowed with abundance of wealth and treasures.  The residents of this land enjoy great happiness, so this land is also called the Western Paradise of Ultimate Bliss

Followers can gain entrance into this paradise by reciting the name of Amitabha Buddha or the phrase:  I seek refuge in Amitabha Buddha.  A follower needs to recite the name with single-minded devotion without being distracted by anything for seven days.   Amitabha Buddha would appear to the those who succeeded at the end of his/her life and grant him/her entrance into the Western Paradise of Ultimate Bliss.

Amitabha Buddha is known as Amida Nyorai in Japan.  This is a giant seated statue of Amitabha Budda in Japan. Another view of the seated giant Amitabha Buddha Statue in Japan. Giant Standing Amitabha Buddha Statue in Taiwan.
