Tuning Up MS Windows | ||||||||||||||||
I have found a few good programs out there that will enhance you MS windows experience. First one is EditPad. EditPad can be found at http://www.jgsoft.com/index.html. EditPad is shareware but the author Jan Goyvaerts ask for a postcard as payment. EditPad replaces your windows notepad and has much, much more options than the old notepad. Jan also has a few more product on his website but, I have only tried his Editpad. ClipTrak is the next utility I like. Cliptrak can be found at http://www.zdnet.com/pcmag/pctech/content/18/10/ut1810.001.html. Cliptrak is a utility that retains your clipboard entries. This gives you something similar to the old "history" command of unix.I think the old "cntr-C" (copy) and "cntr-V" (paste) commands are VERY underrated. I find myself using copy and paste more and more and bmake or wblock less and less. I find it very nice to be able to paste something again that I had put on my clipboard 3 copy commands ago. This utility is definitely worth a try. Convert it is a great little program from Josh Madison and is freeware. Convert it will convert just about everything you can ever think of. This program can be picked up at Josh's home page at http://www.joshmadison.com/software/convert/ Google SketchUp is a nicely package 3D modeling program. Even the free version of this beauty is a lot of fun. SketchUp can be download at http://sketchup.google.com/. Google Earth is a nicely package world viewer. Google Earth free version gives the average user hours worth of fun. Google Earth can be downloaded at http://earth.google.com/. My favorite aplication that Autodesk has put out is Google Earth Extension for AutoCAD, Architecture, Civil 3D, Map 3D . This little beauty lets you export any of drawings into Google Earth. You can then send the newly converted DWG to KML file to anyone with Google Earth and they can see it. No more trying to explain how to download and run DWF viewers. This little jewel can be download at http://labs.autodesk.com/utilities/google_earth_extension_beta/ ArcGIS Explorer is a free GIS world viewer from ESRI. Nice little application that lets you veiw shapefiles without having an actual GIS program. ArcGIS can be downloaded from http://resources.esri.com/arcgisexplorer/index.cfm?fa=whatsnew Open Office is a free alternative to Microsoft Office. Open Office is free only for personal use. If you are planning on using it for your business they do charge. Open Office does everything Microsoft does and then some. It is a great little suite of tool and can be downloaded at http://www.openoffice.org/ MapWindow is a nice little Opensource GIS application. It opens shapefiles and much much more. MapWindow can be had at http://www.mapwindow.org/ Quantum GIS is another nice little Opensource GIS application. Does a lot of stuff and is very simular to MapWindow. Quantum GIS can be downloaded at http://qgis.org/ |
