The Commodore 64 was the hottest selling and most popular computer system of the 1980's, continuing into the early 90's. It was the successor to the PET and VIC 20 computers, and the predecessor to the Commodore 128 and Amiga systems. Its VIC (video interface chip) and SID (sound interface device) chips were so advanced for their times they revolutionized personal computing. The C64 is still very popular in Europe, with a strong and faithful following in the U.S. The company was unfortunately run very poorly, leading to the demise of the company and any upgrade plans for the Commodore. Fortunately, there are many sources for information, software, and hardware in the U.S., and all over the world. I have music from European artists that far exceeds the quality of anything I've heard from a PC's midi synthesizer, despite having 3-voice mono sound (there are accessories to add another SID chip to the C64, bringing it 3 more voices and stereo sound). For those people who no longer have their C64 but are stuck with a PC, there are several C64 emulators out there in shareware. Here's some links to start out:

Creative Micro Designs, an excellent source for Commodore hardware, software, books, cables, accessories, and more.. They manufacture a peripheral called the SuperCPU that increases the speed of the C64 by 20 times or more! They also have hard drives, 3 1/2" floppy drives, and REU drives for the Commodore, plus much more. [SORRY, link removed. This company doesn't support Commodore equipment any more.] |
