[10-26-00] Over the past few weeks I’ve been occasionally going out at night for longer-than-usual walks, as part of an ongoing effort to try to get more exercise. It all started at a very emotional time, due to a death, when I just had to get out of the house for a while. The first night I walked down to the park about 3 tenths of a mile away. The next night I walked as far as the railroad tracks that are exactly 1 mile from my driveway. It was always quite cold so I’d be bundled up in winter-wear. I say this is longer than usual because I never walked farther than the intersection 2 tenths of a mile away, nude or clothed. From those first few walks getting as far as those tracks I realized how safe it was, both in traffic and in awareness from surrounding houses (at that hour, pretty much everybody is asleep). I also found how easy it was to step off the road to avoid road traffic, and I never saw any walkers, joggers, or bikers at that hour this time of the year. Considering all that, I was just itching to make this walk in the nude. The past several nights had a nice thick haze, almost a fog, but it was always too cold. Last night, however, it was just warm enough to not require clothing, at 64º F. I went out on the back (side) porch at 1:30 AM, removing my shirt and leaving it there. I then removed my shorts (with small light in the pocket) and folded them up to carry easily. Now all I was wearing was my glasses, socks, and shoes. As I headed down the driveway I thought I saw the glare of headlights on the garbage can across the street, but it turned out to just be the streetlight at the corner. I went west out of the driveway, in the direction of the tracks. The night was overcast with a very thin haze in the lights, and there was next-to-no breeze. Shortly down the street I saw the sky light up with a flash of distant lightning, too far away to hear. I never even thought about checking the weather radar before leaving, but figured I could get there and home before rain came. A little bit before the first intersection with streetlight, which I have mentioned before, I saw a car was coming. I stepped a few feet off the road, in with some wild bushes, and let the car go by. Now here I am, nude and right next to the road...literally, 3 steps away from pavement. The streetlight at the corner, I have approached nude before within about 50 feet, but I’d never gone under it completely. Tonight, I went right under it (in the opposite shoulder) and kept on going. Now was a new factor: the people on the corner installed some new flood lights which lit me up quite a bit. Anybody *really* looking could probably see that I was nude, but if they only acknowledged that I was somebody walking down the street, I doubt they’d see my state of dress. Three more cars passed after I stepped off the road again, before continuing on my way. Lightning still flashed in the clouds, and all I could hear were passing aircraft and the distant trucks on the highway. I kept on going, passing under that yellow streetlight I went under while nude on my bike when I had just passed a jogger this summer, never seeing anybody this time. I went on past the sewer pump station and river, always having places to step off the road if needed. Strangely, I never had to because there were no more cars for a long time. I went up the slight hill at the end of the street, passing under a very bright white street light and coming to a stop on the train tracks. I had made the entire mile nude! Back when I first started out in nudism I never imagined that I’d do something like this. I turned around and headed back home, under that bright street light again. Then guess what happened? It started to rain! I had just got done saying to myself, "I wish I had some water to drink", then I looked up at the sky to say "Don't take that to mean I want it to rain!" Talk about irony. It started out as a light sprinkle, turning to a light rain. It never got very heavy, but was hard enough to get me thoroughly wet. Now imagine this situation: a person walking down the street nude at about 2 AM on October 27th in Michigan in a rain shower. I’d have thought that at this time of the year, it would be a very cold rain, but surprisingly it was fairly warm. In fact, the rain was the only thing keeping me warm now, as I got cold from evaporation when it let up. My shorts with light were tucked up under my arm now to keep them dry. After a while I stepped off the road to let two cars pass, and also take a whiz while I was there. I was surprised that I had just walked over a mile since the last car passed, at an average walking pace. By now the rain was letting up and I was getting a little chilly. Right near the park (which I mentioned above) I had one last car pass before continuing home. The rest of the walk was uneventful, but notable that by the time I got home my skin was completely dry, where clothing would still be wet and cold if I’d worn them. Anyway, that’s the story of my naked mile. It’s probably the last time I’ll be able to do it this year, since the weather will surely turn cold again. I hope to do it again many times next year, and I have some other ideas for going nude while leaving clothes behind. I’ll have to wait until next year to try them out. I’m looking forward to it!
