Frequently Asked Questions   Plague is an acute, highly fatal disease caused by infection with Yersinia pestis, a gram-negative bacterium. The three major clinical forms of the disease are bubonic, septicemic, and pneumonic.

Plague Prevalence   Plague is often thought of as an ancient conquered disease.
However, the following statistics from the WHO Weekly Epidemiological Record of May 31, 1996 show 18,739 cases causing 1,852 fatalities worldwide between 1980 and 1994. The mortality rate is just under 10%.
