Day 6, Monday June 5th, 2001

At about 2 AM, am awakened with a chronic backache, seems as if this bed am sleeping in is about as old as the home is. Tossing and turning all night, think I only manage about 1 or 2 hour's sleep all night. As daylight sets in the window, clamber out of bed, and my back is killing me. Proceed to dress and wash-up, take one ibuprofen tablet for the pain.

Plans for the day was to drive to the church that Cousin George is pastor of, and to attend the services for this day. This church happens to be close to one of the small villages my father grew up in. Also we had plans to visit the cemetery where my father's parents were both buried. We also made plans to stop by Hannah's parents small farm, which is located between Sambir and the village where my dad grew up, as Hannah had some food to bring to her father and sister. Cousin George also mentioned that there was a young student anxious to meet with me that has been taking English in school and the student was eager to practice his English with me and to learn a bit about the USA. Feeling terrible and my back hurting so bad, could not help but think I cannot sit in a car for so long of a drive, and not be good company with so many people I was to meet this day.

As all of us gather at the dining room table, request that Hannah tell Ariadna that I will have to change my plans for this days visit, because I am not feeling very good. Plans were changed and Ariadna and Max would drive to the village and explain my situation to Cousin George. Max would drop Hannah and I off at her parent's farm, then would come back in two hours to pick us up and then go back to Lviv.

Hannah and I are dropped off at the narrow road that leads to one of many small farms, one of which is her parent's summer retreat. It is raining again as we walk for about 1/2 mile and come to a quaint little farm house of about 5 rooms. The gate is locked and Hannah fears that her father, sister, and niece have left for a visit somewhere. As Hannah decides to check at the neighbors down the road a little distance away, her sister appears from the house, and Hannah is relieved that they are home.

We proceed inside and introductions are made to her father, sister and little niece. As we are visiting, Hannah's sister prepares some robust coffee, a Ukrainian trademark am thinking now. We sit down and chat, of course using Hannah's interpretation skills. Once again, find it a bit uncomfortable meeting new people and having this language barrier. But Hannah's father and sister are very cordial, but still sense they have the same feeling in regards to the language barrier. Hannah's niece is a bundle of energy as she keeps Hannah occupied most of the time.

The little girl is an absolute cutie, and is so inquisitive about the "new guy" in the house. We keep watch for Max and Ariadna to arrive, and as 2 hours have passed, we see Max's car in the distance. We give our farewells to each other as we walk towards the car.

On the road back to Lviv, Max indicates that Cousin George is sorry that we could not make the trip to his parish and village, but he understood that I was not feeling very well. As we are driving to Lviv, it is terribly uncomfortable to sit as my back pain is still present, but is diminishing as the pain reliever is starting to work. Not much is said on the 1 hour drive to Ariadna's apartment, finding out that no one else slept very well in Aunt Olha's home last night. This is apparent as eyes close and heads droop during the ride to Lviv. Around 2 PM we arrive back at Ariadna's apartment. It is now very apparent that no one slept to well the previous night. Ariadna' first impulse is to start cooking, but she assures us that she will not cook so much to eat. Max, Hannah, and myself make ourselves comfortable in the family room as we discuss the past two days events. Max does ask me of how to apply for a temporary work VISA in the USA, as he would like to come to work in the USA for one year so he could earn some money to make his and his families life better in Lviv. He also inquires about how so many illegal immigrants make it into the USA for temporary work.

An hour later, Ariadna brings us to all some food she has cooked, and WOW, this time she has cooked only for 4 people, not eight. As we nibble, we are all suffering from sleep deprivation, and Hannah requests that she will go to her apartment at 5 PM this day. Agreeing with Hannah, as now I must pack my bags to prepare for my departure in the morning.

All the while Ariadna is concerned that she cannot telephone Aunt Olha to see how she is doing. Seems as if Olha's telephone is always busy and Ariadna now worries something is wrong. Max drives us to Hannah's apartment, and we slowly make our way to the elevator. Upon entering Hannah's apartment, mom greets us with an invitation to eat some food. We cordially accept and nibble at the feast she has prepared. Mom inquires of the events of the past two days, and also how her husband is feeling. It is around 7 PM now, and while there is running water, decide to wash up and get relaxed for the evening.

Hannah and her mom decide to show us pictures of their past years. It is now apparent to me that Hannah and her family are a very close-knit family. Can see in all the pictures that this family has been very close and supportive of each other over the years. Take notice of a picture of Hannah's mother and father's wedding picture, and WOW, what a beautiful bride is Hannah's mom.

We chat a bit more until around 10 PM, and no longer able to say awake, all of us go to bed and sleep.
