Day 4, Saturday June 2nd 2001

Jet lag is at it worst as its hard to pull myself out of bed, as the daylight enters into the room. Hannah's mom once again has cooked for a small army, and I take delight in Hannah's robust coffee as an eye opening experience, but at this stage of the visit, it becomes an appreciated drink. Hannah' mom (at this point, just started calling her mom) is worried that I am sick because of not eating much food, and assure "mom" that I am eating well for one person.

At 10 AM Max arrives to pick us up, we go back to Ariadna's apartment, and........... breakfast is waiting. So we indulge and later depart, as this part of the day we travel to the historic part of Lviv.

We visit such buildings as Lviv's famous Opera Theatre and many other buildings that are hundreds of years old; we peek inside a cathedral that is simply decorated immaculately inside. Such high ceilings, maybe 40 feet or so. We visit a street bazarre of many vendors, and I purchase a couple of items to take home to my wife Kathy.

As we scurry back to Ariadna's apartment, we find that Nazar has is waiting. Nazar is the younger of Ariadna's two sons. He is 21 years old and stands about 6'4" with a lean frame. While Ariadna is busy cooking (again as always) Nazar, Max, Hannah, and myself relax in the living room. Discussion is about what is new in Nazar's life, how his school studies are progressing. Nazar is a bit timid, and am trying way to get him to open up. Finally as we are eating dinner, Nazar is asking some questions about my family and the life we have in the USA. As the evening progresses, I hand Nazar an envelope, which I hope will help offset the costs of college. Unfortunately Nazar had traveled 5 hours by train, and is set to depart the same day. I was really glad he chose to come, so as to visit with him (via my interpreter Hannah). Wished him well in his studies, as we all drove to the train station to see him depart off back to his college and his studies.

We arrive back at Ariadna's apartment to be greeted with more food (Am thinking that I will weigh 20 pounds more when I get back in the states). As always the food is good, but now Hannah is expecting a telephone call at her apartment, so Max drives us there. As we arrive, Hannah's mom has........ Take a guess..... YEP cooked something for us to eat. Graciously we nibble at the food not to hurt mom's feelings. Later that evening, suggest to Hannah and her mom that I treat them to McDonalds, since her mom never had been there. Again the reservation due to the "high cost" of a Happy Meal, but further prodding makes mom and Hannah decide they will go.

As we walk to McDonald's, noticed that as several days before, there are many people selling foods on the side streets ranging from freshly picked vegetables, to recently butchered meats, to fresh milk that has been squeezed from the cow into water bottles, just about everything.

Upon entering McDonald's, keep a close eye on Hannah's mom's reactions. Had told Hannah the last time we were at McDonalds, that her mom would enjoy the visit to McDonalds, almost more that the little kids. True to form, watching her moms eyes light up when we entered McDonalds, and even more so when we brought her a Happy Meal. One could see the pure childlike happiness on her face, the kiddish smile, as her mom opened the Happy Meal box to see what was inside. Only wish I had a camera with me to capture that moment. Pleasure at its purest. And typical of American kids, Hannah and her mom did not eat all of the Happy Meal, just admired the toy inside, guess the food was too Americanized.

As we press back for Hannah apartment, the sky is gray and hinting of rain. Once in the apartment, suggest that I will go to the side street vendors and purchase a beer or two. Hannah's mom said that she would drink some beer with me. Hanna is totally surprised at her mom's comments. Hannah tells me her mom very seldom will drink beer, and that this must be a very special exception she is doing for me. Hannah then chuckles and says that I am a "bad but good" influence on her mom.

Thank goodness for Hannah's interpretation skills.

Quickly, decide its time to wash up before the 9 PM water cut off time. Hannah, mom, and myself relax in their living room for an hour or so, chatting about the days events. Mom then scurries off to bed, Hannah nose is getting red, a bit on the tipsy side, from the 9% beer we have been drinking, so she also scurries off to bed. For me, thinking I am still on Arizona time, decide to stay up for another hour and read the newspaper that brought along with me from Phoenix.
