Hello Family & Friends,
For me the best way to start doing Family History is:
1. Interview the oldest relatives in your family. Writing a questionnaire that can be sent or done in person or videotaping or audio recording the interview would work. Also copy their photos, family tree in their Bible, vital documents such as birth, marriage & death, etc. I have learned that even if you are not able to spend lots of time currently that these things will help you later when you do want to organize your families’ history. Get this done as soon as possible, it maybe too late if you wait and some questions may never get answered!
2. On the website of “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints” at www.familysearch.org there are many helpful & detailed or simple ways on how to get organized, useful resources, a free family tree software download which is called “P.A.F. 5.2” or “Personal Ancestral File 5.2”. Also note that at your local “Family History Center” you will find great free help from the volunteers & insights to finding relatives.
3. There are several ways to find info. such as using “genealogical societies” or by going to a newspaper’s office. I found that my local library & even libraries that are not in the city in which I live would give out free cards. This has been valuable because I use their online resources at home and research in the “historical” newspapers, censuses, etc. Note that just because your relative did not live in New York does not mean that they are not listed in the “New York Times”, or other popular newspapers. Some libraries have a “genealogical section” with lots of books such as “old church records” listing memberships, marriages, or baptisms that are not available online yet. Remember to “ALWAYS” verify for yourself the resources because researchers make mistakes!
4. Periodically I will be updating these web pages at www.wansend.com. Note that the listed surnames in my favorite websites are either in my Patriarchal or Matriarchal branch therefore you may not recognize them. My email is ctoomey@wansend.com & I will email you back when I can.
Sincerely,
Crystal Toomey
