Changes Since Last Version

Another long period since the last revision of TLOFCRP--more than a full year! Where does the time go? Work and family, of course! 8-) Please be assured that I have been faithfully queuing up all of the information everyone has been sending to me and that it has all been reflected in this latest version. Thanks to all who have provided me with this information so that TLOFCRP can continue to grow!

Introduction

Below is a list of computer-related publications that, to qualified subscribers (see below), the subscription itself is free. This list was inspired by the (literally) several feet of magazines, newspapers, and newsletters that I get at work each week, most of which I never really asked to receive and none of which I pay for.

I've organized the list in alphabetical order by publication name. Each entry contains a brief overview of that publication, including: its primary focus, typical content, publication frequency, subscription information, as well as an (admittedly) subjective overall rating. If you find any of the information in an entry to be incorrect (or if you disagree with my rating) please let me know via e-mail at huguelet@sun.soci.niu.edu. Also, if you have information about a free computer-related publication (no catalogs, please) which appears in print (no e-zines, please) not included in this list, please send me that information and I'll add it to the list and add your name to the list of contributors.

Please note: several of these publications have some qualifications which subscribers must meet in order for their subscription to be free. For example, Reseller Management might require that you be a computer VAR or reseller. They may send you a small form to fill out asking you to describe your company and your job. Please supply the information requested on these forms, being as complete and honest as possible. This information is used by these publishers when selling advertising space in their publications, and misrepresenting yourself, your job, or your company undermines their ability to do so in an accurate manner. However, do not be discouraged from applying-- let them decide if you don't meet their free-subscription qualifications, not you.

The current version of "THE List of Free Computer-Related Publications" can be found on the World Wide Web at <URL: http://www.soci.niu.edu/~huguelet/TLOFCRP/>.

More Free Publications

NetLine Corp. currently offers a service which allows people on the 'net to submit subscription requests for certain publications via an on-line form. Several of the publications in this list (such as SunExpert) are among these, and links to these forms have been included in the sections of this list about these magazines. For the latest list of publications which allow this form of subscribing, visit NetLine's W3 site at <URL: http://www.netline.com/TradePub/>.

A Note to Those Outside of the USA and Canada

I've been told by a couple of readers that several of the publications in TLOFCRP will not send copies of their publications for free to addresses outside of the USA and Canada (due to the additional postage costs). If your subscription request is denied for this reason, and you really want to receive that publication, you may want to contact them and offer to pay enough to cover the additional postage costs. This runs contrary to the central theme of TLOFCRP (totally free publications), but such special circumstances justify bending the rules a little bit.

A Note about Free Publications from CMP Publications

Because of concerns CMP Publication has had in the past with TLOFCRP, I have voluntarily removed information about their free newspapers and magazines from the list. These publications include:

If you would like to subscribe to one of these publications, you will need to obtain the information necessary to do so by other means. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.

Thanks To Those Who've Contributed

A special thanks to all those who have helped to build this list through their contributions:

Have fun subscribin'!
