Reunion Notes
by Lyle Raquipiso
The UPIS Batch ‘87 10th anniversary reunion was successfully
held on 27 December 1997, Saturday, at the UP Bahay ng Alumni, UP
Diliman. Around 110 alumni, comprising 1/3 of the batch, attended
the affair.

Registration started at 7:00 pm. (Class Valedictorian, now a
lawyer, Jamea Garcia was most eager, arriving at 5:30 pm.) By
8:30 pm, everyone was enjoying the sumptuous dinner prepared by
Cabalen.

After dinner, a program ensued, hosted by Bubuy Balangue and
Vanessa de Leon. Atty. Adeliza Magno-Guingoyon led the singing
of the UP Naming Mahal. During the invocation, led by Jamea,
those present remembered their departed batchmates - Roy Alcudia,
Cesar Espina and Mike Garido.

Tina Agbayani started the show with a love song aptly entitled
"Hello". Then came the giving out of special awards. Ten trophies
were especially made and handed out to the following awardees:
Tina Panganiban-Perez for GMA News (Most Telegenic Award); Hazel
Arboleda-Dado and daughter Arielle (UPIS Parent-Baby Look-a-Like
Award); Ronald and Diday Alcudia (Heaviest Couple Award); Nikko
and Liza Vicencio (Lightest Couple Award); Marcia Reycio-Cruz,
now Mrs. Matute, and Joel Vinarao (Most Remembered Couple); Paolo
Arevalo and Mireille Gose (Dream Tandem Award); Mary Grace
Tolentino (Most Productive or "Pinakamaraming Anak" Award);
Vanessa de Leon (Most Surprising Transformation or Pinakamalaking
Pagbabago" Award); Pong Landicho (Male Star of the Night); and,
Liza Laudico-Vicencio (Female Star of the Night).

Eric Suguitan was comic as a presentor for the Most Telegenic
Award. He somehow managed to convince Mike Saenz to come up the
stage and accept the award for Tina (who was absent) much to the
delight of the crowd (Tina and Mike used to be paired to each
other). Among the nominees for this category are: Tracy Socco for
Lucky Me commercial, Liza Laudico for Teysi ng Tahanan, Liza
Lazaro for Partners: Mel and Jay, Diday for Eat Bulaga; Bubuy for
Mel and Jay; Edmund Pike for Kapag Tumibok ang Puso MTV; Vanessa
de Leon for Safeguard commercial; and, Rida Jurado-Pascual for
Mara Clara.

For the Most Remembered Couple Award, almost all high school
sweethearts that you can think of were nominees, but what drew
the loudest cheer was this list: Ton-ton and Mireille, Ton-ton
and Diday, Ton-ton and Winnie, Ton-ton and Joy.

The batch also had fun playing Trivial Pusit with Sidney
Ventura as the game master. Two groups of six were randomly
chosen and were asked to answer trivia questions such as "Who won
as Ms. Intrams in Gr. 9?"; "Who was our CAT Commandant whom
Florence had a crush on?" and "Who was Mr. Diaz’ teaching
assistant?".

Married couples were asked to come up the stage to play the
newly-wed’s game which was won by Diday and Ronald. Other
contestants were Weng Soriaga and Gussy Villa-real, Rida and
Sandy Pascual, Winnie and Dennis del Castillo, Trixia and Ariel
Arias, and Liza and Nikko.

Diday and Ronald granted the batch’ request for them to sing
"How Do You Keep The Music Playing?", the same song they sang
eleven years ago during the Culture Shock concert at the Abelardo
Hall Auditorium on 29 November 1986.

Prof. Ma. Theresa de Villa, presently the UPIS principal,
graced the affair. In her brief speech, she congratulated Batch
‘87 for organizing such a successful event. She announced that
the UPIS will definitely be moved out of its present location and
relocated inside the UP Campus, although no definite site has yet
been identified.

After the program, the entire batch trooped to the stage for a
batch picture-taking. Quite a few still came in by midnight,
rushing from their previous engagements.

The crowd broke up at 1:00 am. The past six hours was
undoubtedly too short to catch up with what’s been happening to
long missed batchmates. But those present definitely had a great
time looking back at the ten years that had passed. They went
home with the thought that the next reunion will surely be an
event worth looking forward to.
