History: Mileena is a character from Mortal Kombat. She was first introduced in Mortal Kombat 2. She then reappeared in Ultimate Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat Gold, both of which games where upgrades of sorts to MK3 and MK4, used to bring back characters omitted. Mileena officially returned to Mortal Kombat in Mortal Kombat Deception.
Biography: The official storyline states the following:
Mileena is an assassin serving Shao Kahn and Kitana's twin sister. When Kitana is seen making contact with the Earth Warriors, Mileena is ordered to keep a close eye on her twin and stop her at all costs.
It is revealed in her ending, as well as Kitana's that Mileena is in fact not her twin. Mileena was created through Shang Tsung's sorcery, by cloning Kitana and blending in the Tarkatan characteristics.
Shao Kahn, who didn't trust Kitana, the rightful heir to Edenia's throne, asked Shang Tsung to clone the princess, intending to replace her. Shang Tsung chose the Tarkatan, for their physical resilience and bloody battle prowess. Whether the process went wrong or whether it was intended as a way to keep Mileena under a leash, the 'clone' looked identical to Kitana, apart from the mouth and jaw, where she bore the features of a Tarkatan. Hence Mileena wears a mask to hide her 'deformity'.
It is interesting to remark that although Mileena is supposedly created by a species stronger to Edenians, she is physically weaker than her twin.
Realising the purpose of her creation and angered by her deformity, either due to vanity or due to despise of the Tarkatan race, Mileena becomes bitter both against Kitana, as well as her makers. She forms an alliance with Baraka who is described as her secret companion suggesting an 'intimate' involvement.
Mileena fought Kitana but she lost and Kitana kills her. Her spirit enters the Netherrealm, where Shinnock resurrects her, offering her the chance for another confrontation with Kitana should she serve him. Mileena accepts.
It appears that Kitana was in turn manipulated by Onaga, the Dragon King. Her absense, or perhaps a fight that has not been recounted, gave Mileena the opportunity to seize the rulership of Edenia posing as Kitana. Under her command, Baraka and the Tarkatan unleash attacks on the Earth warriors.
Mileena then turns against Baraka, whom she reveals to dislike, for the fact that he knows who she truly is. There are two possible endings, none confirmed as more accurate than the other as of yet.
In Mileena's ending she summons Baraka alone and kills him by throwing him into a chamber of flesh eating insects.
In Baraka's ending he suspects the trap and sends someone else in his place. He in turn ambushes Mileena and cuts her in half, expectedly killing her.
As the opening to Mortal Kombat Deception suggests, there is a violent confrontation between Mileena and Baraka, or at least someone who seems to be Baraka. The ending remains to be announced.
Vital statistics: LIttle is known about Mileena's vital statistics. I'm making some assumptions here.
Height: Between 5' 8" and 6'0" (roughly between 1.71m - 1.80m)
Weight: Probably around 120-130lbs (roughly around 60-65Kg)
Hair: Black
Eyes: Black
Skin color: Slightly tanned white
Strength: Medium
Speed: Fast
Stamina: Average
Appearance: Mileena is garbed in purple and lately, in fucsia (darkish pink). She has long black hair and wears a veil over the lower part of her face. When the veil is removed, it is obvious that Mileena has a horridly inhuman mouth, similar to Baraka.
Mileena's trademark weapon is the sai. She also has three well recognised moves, the sai lounge, the overhead heeldrop, where she mysteriously goes through the floor only to fall on the opponent's head heel first, and the roll, involving her rolling into a ball on the ground, hurling herself on the opponent.
Outfits
MK2 Outfit: Mileena wears a purple body suit fastened in the waist with a black sash. The outfit is matched with identically coloured knee high boots, elbow long gloves, a hair-band and a ninja-style mouth cover. She uses her sais as missiles, in one of her fatalities and in her ending pose. This outfit is identical to Kitana's and Jade's.
UMK Outfit: This was a rather silly variation of her previous outfit. The body suit obtained a rather deep opening in the middle, barely held together by interlaced strings, fastened at the top with gold buttons, while the leg hems became higher. Although the collar representing that of a chinese dress might have been a nice touch, it was rather disappointing to see Mileena exposing her figure rather than her fighting skills. The boots became thigh long and the hair-band was removed. The outfit was trimmed in black. Mileena wore her hair in a tight bun behind her head. Her figure became more slender and frail with emphasis on the breasts. This outfit is identical to Kitana's and Jade's.
MK Gold Outfit: Very similar to UMK, only with less detail, perhaps owing to the new graphics environment they used. Mileena wore her hair in a tall ponytail. This outfit is identical to Kitana's, except Kitana is not hiding her lower mouth.
MK Deception Outfits: In this game Mileena has two outfits.
The first one consists of a remarkable top that is closed on the neck and inversely revealing of the breasts, ending to long, flared sleeves. The top has some 'straps' lacing her exposed stomach. The lower part of it is covering what's necessary, leaving her thighs exposed, although on the back it has a flowing piece of textile with intricate patterns. She wears no gloves and instead of a mouth-cover, she wears a veil that is semi-transparent from close inspection. Her hair is worn in a tall ponytail.
The second outfit is rather... interesting. Mileena's all but naked body is laced strategically with cloth that covers just enough to keep the game out of the explicit region. The outfit is kept in place with strategical buckles. The 'harem-dancer' outfit is matched with bangles on the wrists, knee high boots and the veil over the mouth. Yet this appearance is not without some merit, since Mileena lets her beautiful hair flow freely!
It's rather flattering that a certain image of this outfit became the cover of a magazine but personally I feel Mileena needs to concentrate more on fighting and less on what she wears, or more accurately, what she doesn't.
Mileena has regained a fitter physique with muscular thighs and broad shoulders but she could use a little work on her arms.
MK Annihilation: Though the colour purple remained, the outfit had significant changes. Mileena wore a purplish bodice with straps and open front, hemming on the waist. Below she wore black elastic leggings and black boots. The gloves were open in the fingers and she wore the hairband. She wore her hair tied on the back of her hair and braided.
Actresses who brought Mileena into screen:
Katalin Zamiar: Mortal Kombat 2. The Best
Becky Gable: Ultimate Mortal Kombat. Not very sucessfull.
Dana Hee: Mortal Kombat Annihilation. Olympic TaeKwonDo gold medallist, gave Mileena good moves!
Personal reflections
Mileena was introduced in Mortal Kombat II as an assassin of Shao Kahn and Kitana's twin sister.
It was later revealed that she was a mutant clone created by Shang Tsung, a fact I ignored until I saw her ending.
And I was heartbroken for days. Really.
But my love and loyalty have been too strong by then. Strong enough to ignore these facts. I have not regretted my choice.
Melodrama aside, I like Mileena for a multitude of reasons.
Mileena is a female fighter I can rely upon. With most female fighters being disappointing and chosen by those who want to prove that they don't mind using a female fighter just to say they do, Mileena makes a distinct, refreshing change. She doesn't pass merely as a nice set of exposed flesh and she is respected for her fighting abilities. Far from being a bitch, she has an attitude and a way to prove it.
On a more personal note, she's not blonde and at least when she first appeared, she was more of a muscled fighter than a boob-show. Unfortunately it seems that lately she vies away from her assassin image to a more feminine, scheming one. While her appearance has been significantly enhanced, thankfully her fighting prowess has not been compromised. She's still fast and deadly, even though she might lack in strength, making her a high level middle tier fighter.
When I first saw Mileena, I had no idea that she was meant to be a half Tarkatan clone or what her story was meant to be. I have been asked frequently why I like her, even though she is Kitana's clone and looks like a female of Baraka's tribe. My answer is and always will be, why not? I like her because I do.
As I see Mileena, she is gorgeous, her eyes especially are absolutely stunning. It was her eyes and that wild glare in them that caught my attention in MK2. Sge seemed violently aggressive, dangerous as she was beautiful, yet somehow pained and frightened at the same time. Though I had no idea why that might have been, not knowing the story then, I'm glad I read it correctly. She hasn't let me down since.
I hold Mileena as one of the best fighters in any game, certainly the best female fighter, alongside Kitana and perhaps Jade. What determined my attachment to her over the other two, especially Kitana, was the fact that I found her easier to master.
There you have it.
You can't uproot an age-old tree... and Mileena resides in my heart. For ever.
I think she is super sexy and although not a top class beauty, she could easily mash under her foot any supermodel you suggest - both in attractiveness... and literally - especially literally!!!!!
I find it rather endearing, from a character perspective, how Mileena gives into her bitterness and goes solo with every means possible, showing that, even though she was cloned, she still retains a sense of character and individuality.
I am not sure on the involvement with Baraka however, as Mileena doesn't show any sign of being capable for affection, unless the attraction was physical, after all they are as similar as you can get and to Baraka, she might appear as the most beautiful Tarkatan he's ever seen. I see this more as a rather interesting fantasy of a beautiful woman lying with a beast however, well, to each to their own.
Mileena enroaches many of my hopes, aspirations and things I admire. She has been my inspiration and drive in far too many ways until I see more than just the MK2 character in her.
Although I very much admire Mileena, I don't pretend to BE her. I am quite content with myself and I don't need a secondary personality to walk proudly. Indeed Mileena often is a distant wish of what I would like to be but thankfully, like dreams are, this is a really distant place. Far like a star. Therefore I will be able to admire my star for ever.
