Housetrap

Holly Day

you can still catch them, butterflies
with your bare hands, sheathed fists
lure little girls in with your music
sweet words. I hide in my room
watch you through the doorway
remembering when it was me sitting there
on the couch, feet tucked beneath me
in awe of your beauty,
of you. your charm
still amazes me, even feeling the effect
second-hand, through these almost-lovers
you lure and collect, these brilliant trophies
invading my home.

Wolfegang, 1st Birthday

sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night
fingers close on his tiny hands
remembering a dream where I almost lost him
remembering the dreams that say I still can

mother, I sit up in the middle of the night
watching him sleep, and angel without wings
heart beating so strong I can see through pale flesh
an incredible child
I still feel inside me

Learning to Juggle at Ten

Falling apart was the only natural end
to the dance—the spheres slipped from orbit
pastel balls rolling across the pavement
to the sound of laughter. I want

to begin again, show the kids on the swings
that I can do this, command the force of gravity
itself—in the center of the universe I stand
arms held out, benevolently reaching to the sky

like some preteen statue of Krshna.
But I just stood there, watching the colored balls rolling out
under the jungle-gym, trying so hard not to cry.
One of the kids picked up a ball, a bright blue one,

and threw it at the back of my head. I remember
lying on my back on the concrete, wishing furiously to be discovered
by a chance passing circus, the ringmaster pulling me to my feet
and booming, "You're exactly what we've been looking for!"

and take me away, far away,
from all the horrible teasing laughing faces
to a big circus tent, in another city
where I'd have my own show.
