The this i wrote for my cousin after participating in a Veterens Day Service..During the service i walked down in front on the whole school and lit a candle for Don while they called out is name, birthdate, deathdate and the war he served in..it was a very emotional experence for me and helped me truly understand how much he ment to me.
I REMEMBER
I remember all the fun we had
the nights and stars
the rides and cars
and all the stories and food
I remember all the times before
and all the times since
when I've wanted you here
for a hug and a laugh
I remember the last Christmas
with you and that silly comb
all the presents
and the jokes about your socks
I remember when you left
and the months we waited
for a letter or a note
and sent you a video hug
I remember sitting
and talking with Tracie
about how you'd love
to see grass again
I remember shortly after
when they told me
I didn't beleive them
until i saw you one last time
I remember seeing you
laid out in that coffin
all stiff,cold
and silent
I remember leaving you
being one of the last out
Tracie patted the lid
and told you goodnight
I remember your funeral
the happy and the sad
all the Morehead Ladies
and all the tears
I remember your gravesite
though i couldn't find it now
the 21 gun salute
and the drifting notes of Taps
I remember you
how you looked, talked
how i miss you
how i was forgetting
I remembered you today
I was the last to walk down
with all the others watching
it was silent all around
I remembered you today
with the lighting of a candle
and with tears
as i blew it out
