The Exploding Camper (Part 1)
(back)
When I was first told this tale I refused to believe such a thing could happen.
The tale as related to me happens on a camping trip to the Holcomb Valley campground in Southern California.
After a night of good cheer and revelry one of the group decides a trip to the local outhouse is in order. It is then that the horrible discovery of the existence of the exploding camper takes place.
After a brief and none to in-depth investigation of the situation it would seem that an explosive amount of combustible gas had built up in the outhouse, or in the camper, and had been ignited by an unknown cause, possibly spontaneous combustion.
The grim and gruesome effects of this explosion were to be seen every where within the confines of the outhouse. It would appear as this particular outhouse being a sturdy brick building with a substantial roof the hapless victim of the explosion ricocheted about within the confines of the small room until the explosive forces of the gasses were spent. Remarkably the explosion apparently did not kill the camper as no body was ever found.
The local park ranger charged with the routine cleaning of the outhouse's in the area summed it up best with a well thought out narration belying his Navy background starting with
"What the Hell....".
At first this would seem to be an isolated incident, but strikingly similar incidents can be found in the narration's of The Exploding Jogger and The Exploding Camper (Part 2).
It is entirely possible that a few Exploding Campers could be the cause of global warming as the amount of methane released is probably far to great to measure with current scientific instruments.
