LITTLE PRAIRIE BY THE SCHOOL Proposal Guidelines page 1 of 2 Sponsored by Lucent Technologies In collaboration with The Conservation Foundation Our Purpose: To develop an awareness and appreciation of native prairies in local school children, parents, school staff and communities through long term prairie restoration projects. In addition to the Application Form, you may also add, using your own format, your plans for a school prairie restoration project not to exceed two pages. Here are some of the criteria we will be looking for: * Enthusiasm for and a long-term commitment to prairie restoration are the top two priorities of this program. * Interdisciplinary curriculum built around the project to stimulate a holistic understanding of prairie. * A plan to maintain the prairie plot for a minimum of five years, including summer vacations. * A specific itemized budget; funds requested from this program may be used for the purchase of native seeds, native plants, or materials such as torpedo sand necessary to propagate the plants. (This does not include labor or consultation service costs.) Other items, such as material for fencing and paths, may be part of your project, but should not should not constitute a significant portion of this funding. * All restoration must take place on public or private school property. If the restoration project is planned for an area contiguous to school property owned by another party, the project leader is responsible for obtaining permission for use of this land. Participants in the program are entitled to an attractive custom made sign that states the name of the school and the name of the project. Lucent Technologies will provide the sign free of charge; installation will be the responsibility of each individual school. DEADLINE: Proposals will be reviewed and processed on a first-come, first served basis. Preference will be given to newly funded schools; schools who had received previous funding from Lucent for prairie restoration will be considered starting in January, 2001. Therefore we strongly encourage any new schools to submit proposals by November 30, 2000. Proposal Guidelines continued on next page
