Recently, while having a conversation with a friend, I was exclaiming enthusiastically about the virtues of the internet. My friend, not sharing my appreciation for the World Wide Web, responded, "So, what's so great about it? It's nothing but a great big library."

Yes, but what a library! It's the Library Of Congress in the world's biggest shopping mall next door to the United Nations and the World Trade Center. I've lost count of all the tools and services that are available for navigating and using the 'net. I've also lost count of how many of them are free.

See the clock and the news ticker at the top of the page? I got 'em free. If you can't see them your browser isn't Java-enabled. I use Netscape Communicator 4.03, which includes Java along with e-mail, newsgroups, a webpage editor and internet conferencing. Free.

Getting onto the internet isn't free yet, but it gets cheaper and easier every day. My Internet Service Provider is Sprynet, one of the hundreds out there.

Once on the 'net, I can check my E-mail any time, any place, from any computer.
Free.

I keep in touch with friends and family with instant messages and internet phone.
Free.

I make new friends and find people with similar interests to mine in my favorite chat rooms.
Free.

I play Trivial Pursuit and other games.

I maintain this website home page.

I check up on the news, weather, even my horoscope.

I get maps and directions for trips from 3 miles to 3,000 miles.

I send out greeting cards on special occasions.

I look up phone numbers.

I search the Web.

I listen to music, concerts, radio broadcasts.

I try out great new software.

And I take classes on how to use all these wonderful tools a little better.
