FACTS

Eastern Canada, the wolf was very rare by 1870's. It was extinct in

New Brunswick by 1880 , in Nova Scotia by 1900 and in Newfoundland by
1913

About 1900 , the wolf had been removed from all of it's ranges in the

eastern half of the U.S. , except for the Great Lakes region

Wolves inhabitating Kenai Pennisula in Alaska were gone by 1925

The last wolf in the State of Washington died in 1940

Last wolves in both Colarado and Wyoming were killed in 1943

Much of the slaughter was done by Federal Agents

136 wolves , including 80 pups were killed in Yellowstone Park

between 1914 and 1926

Between 1937 and 1969 , U.S. Federal Agents killed 51,857 wolves

across the U.S.

Between 1954 and 1958 , about 2,000 wolves per year were killed in

the Northwest Territories in a misguided attempt to stop declines in the
caribou numbers

Research in the 1930's and 1940's began to show predator control as

ineffective and unnecessary in game management , but few people listened

a new poision called Compound 1080 was widely used against wolves

between 1949 and 1972 and then was cancelled by the U.S. enviromental
Protection Agency. It is still being used in British Columbia

It is ironic that many fish and game departments exist to support the

hunters and fishermen who fund them through the sale of tags and licenses.
The irony turns to tragedy though , when these same departments kill wolves
to appease hunters

In 1983 , British Columbia Wildlife Branch announced plans to kill 80

percent of the wolves in the northeast Peace and Omineca districts in order
" to support moose and deer populations ". However , the close ties between
the department and the hunting lobby quickly became evident. To fund the
wolf kill , the government stated their intention to hold a lottery , first prize
being a hunting trip to Zimbabwe. Despite a government report that the
moose and deer numbers had decreased primarily because of loss of habitat ,
overhunting , and a series of severe winters , the wolf was the one put in the
crosshairs. Public outcry was loud and angry , but over 400 wolves were still
killed before the program was abandoned

Most recent U.S. kill is the in Alaska in 1993. Dept. of Fish and Game

anounced plans to kill 300-400 wolves that winter and 100-300 annually
thereafter , primarily by aerial shooting. Animal rights groups were outraged
and launched a boycott of Alaskan travel. Over 40,000 people wrote in to
oppose the planned kill , but after much debate , a scaled-down version of the
kill was approved

Most recent Canadian wolf kill was planned for elimination of 150

wolves in the Yukon in 1993. Purpose was to support the Aishihik caribou
herd. About 70 wolves were killed at a cost of an incredible $2,500 per wolf
