Find out what you should do at home to keep our rivers healthy
- Facilitated through the Lane Cove Rive Catchment Combined Councils Stormwater and Bushland Working Group,the development of standard sediment control policies across all catchment councils.
- Assisted in the production, by the Combined Councils Stormwater and Bushland Working Group, of a Stormwater Control Structures casestudy document, featuring structures used by councils in the catchment, to allow comparison and information exchange on the most appropriate means of stormwater control.
- Begun the collection and compilation of water quality data for councils, and other testing bodies, in the catchment to establish a catchment water quality picture
- Donated funds to assist in the establishment of two new senior Streamwatch programs at Hunters Hill and Epping Boys High School.
- Participated in discussions with Sydney Water and the Waterways Advisory Panel on the sewerage treatment options for Sydney Harbour.
- Facilitated the development of a proposal for a Fishway on Lane Cove National Park Weir, and promoted this proposal with appropriate funding bodies.
- Financed six community small projects ($5000 or less) to rehabilitate creeks , or to manage stormwater impacts in the catchment.
Landuses within the Catchment
- Continued to monitor and comment on development of the M2 Motorway, and its impacts on the catchment environment.
- Participated in public consultation and comment regarding Council Housing Strategies within the catchment.
- Continued to promote the consideration of catchment issues in Local Environmental Plans, Development Control Plans, and other major planning decisions made by councils in the catchment.
- Financed five community small projects to perform bush regeneration in the catchment.
- Reviewed the draft plan of Management for Lane Cove National Park, and participated in the committee looking at proposed extensions to the national park.
- Supported Willoughby Council in their efforts to maintain their Foreshore Building Line as a means of protecting bushland in the catchment.
Education
- Participated in the Streamwatch program in our catchment, attending network meetings, training days and planning sessions, giving presentations on catchment issues to School Streamwatch Coordinators.
- Underook creek and drain marking program throughout the catchment.
- Initiated and assisted in organised a preliminary training day for 13 primary schools in the catchment to introduce them to the Streamwatch 5-8 Program.
- Produced a display featuring the goals and achievements of the LCRCMC, and explaining the principles of Total Catchment Management and the issues affecting the Lane Cove River Catchment.
- Participated in 6 community open days, showing our display, and talking with the catchment community.
- Assisted in the funding and organisation of sediment control training sessions for councils officers from each council in our catchment.
- Financed research by University students into Stormwater management in Lane Cove National Park.
- Contributed money and expertise to the publication and distribution of the brochure for builders and the community; "KEEP IT CLEAN; A Guide to Sediment Control on Small Building Sites".
- Produced the first issue of the LCRCMC’s Newsletter, to be published quarterly and widely distributed to organisations and community in the catchment.
- Distributed information on Total Catchment Management, the activities of the LCRCMC and our Strategic Plan to all libraries in the catchment.
- Invited guest speakers to present to the Catchment Management Committee on the following issues; State of Environment Reporting, State of Catchment Reporting, Agenda 21, and Lane Cove Estuary Management Committee.
Community Participation
- The appointment of 10 new community members to the LCRCMC.
- Hosted, with Middle Harbour and Sydney Northern Beaches Catchment Management Committee’s, a funding workshop to increase the access of community groups to the variety of funding programs available to them.
- Placed advertisement in 3 local newspaper, and brief columns in two others, notifying of the availability of Natural Heritage Trust and Small Project Funding for 1997.
- Received and assessed 11 small community projects for 1997. Additionally, 7 Natural Heritage Trust projects were submitted for the Lane Cove River Catchment area.
- Provided information to community members on environmental problems, and assisted them in identifying the most effective means of addressing their problem.
- Participated in a catchment tour (by Catcment Management Committee members) to visit community and council, and state government project sites.
Regional and Interagency Co-operation
- Organised a workshop of all councils in the catchment to discuss the issues involved in State of Environment reporting, and to identify possible regional cooperation and strategies for future reporting.
- Continued to contribute and support our Combined Councils Stormwater and Bushland Working Group, which meets monthly.
- Acknowledge the contribution of representatives on our committee from the Dept. of Land and Water Conservation, National Parks, Sydney Water, and the EPA.
- Lobbied for the establishment of additional Catchment Management Committee’s and a coordinating body for the whole of Sydney Harbour Catchment to ensure the implementation of the principles of Total Catchment Management.
